Teri Hatcher appeared to have been struck by a dreaded wardrobe malfunction as she as she arrived for an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman in New York last night.

The silky top layer of her dress looked to have come unstitched at the waist, with more than half of the skirt slipping down around her thigh.

But as she sashayed along in front of the crowd happily showing off the confection from all angles, it became clear the bizarre look was actually intentional.

The actress, who turns 44 on December 8, was on the talk show to promote her hit show, Desperate Housewives.

The new series, currently airing on Channel 4, picks up five years on when her character Susan has split from husband Mike Delfino.

Even Fergie’s bling was no match for the wattage on the 550 pound star adorned with 25,000 Swarovski crystals that will sit atop the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. The singer wore a graphic Tommy Hilfiger dress this afternoon to unveil the star that stands over 9.5 feet tall. She and other A-listers including Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Garner, Kelly Rutherford, Teri Hatcher, and Dita Von Teese designed miniature stars that will be auctioned off, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting The Clothes Off Our Back Foundation. The auction kicks off on November 12 and ends on December 10.

Chic Report had a chance to chat with the superstar songstress at the Rock Center Cafe before her big debut.

What are your favorite red carpet moments? Are there any dresses that made you feel incredible?
I don’t wear many long dresses, because everyone wants to put me in short dresses, but I loved the yellow floor-length Calvin Klein dress that I wore to the Grammys this year.

What inspired your Swarovski star?
I put “Hope 2008″ on it, because I felt it was a year that we really needed hope. My prayers were answered. It will be auctioned off at www.clothesoffourback.org. Seeing the other stars, though, well…I think some of the other celebrities have got me beat.

Whose star do you envy?
I love Dita’s!

Do you have any favorite holiday memories from your childhood?
I used to always sneak out before everyone was awake and check out the Christmas tree and peek at all the presents. That was my big secret thing.

What’s next for you?
A lot. I’m filming a movie–Nine, the musical. I’m working with Rob Marshall, who directed Chicago. I’m also recording a Black Eyed Peas album that’s due out next year. I’m also working on a shoe line with Brown Shoe Co. that’s launching in spring 2009.

Attending the annual Lupus LA Bag ladies lunch, she chose a green dress signed by Monique Lhuillier. The dress begins beautifully with a sparkling strapless top and continues dramatically feathered below the waist.
