Recessionista: Vintage Gets Affordable

There's been a lot of discussion, on this site and others, about the popping price bubble with luxury goods.

It hasn't happened yet, even though fewer people can buy designer products right now, and even though $1,000 for shoes is more ridiculous than hunting moose in the White House.

But those seeking Chanel and Gucci on a budget may still be in luck, at least in one department: vintage clothing.

Though Burberry trenches still hover at $1,000 at Barneys, and Rodarte gowns go for $5,000 at Bergdorf, we've seen near-plummeting prices on bags, shoes, and dresses at second-hand stores around New York City. This weekend alone, we spied a Botkier bag for $80, a Chanel jacket for $200, and various starlet jeans for $20 - $40 each. Hunting around eBay for Luella and Anna Sui shows a similar trend - as in, you might actually be able to buy it.

Those of you in small towns are like, "So? I bought a Pucci dress at a second hand store this week for $3!" And for that, we will always envy you... sigh.

Adventures in NYC (one of many episodes)

I do not, on most occassions, faithfully watch every episode of any one reality show, with the exception of Season 1 of Bravo TV's Make Me A Supermodel. This is primarily due to the beautiful men who were on the show. This one in particular.
Ronnie Kroell, is a fellow Chicagoan who I had the pleasure to sit behind and gawk at (a few rows behind actually) a Broadway show in NYC this past Saturday.
My friends and I went to go see the 2pm show of Avenue Q at the Golden Theater, Broadway. We had just sat down in our respective seats--scattered around the theater due to availability of tix at the TKTS booth--when Ronnie walks in with 4-5 guy friends and to sit in the second row of the matinee. It took me a few minutes to realize who he was, but yes, his boyish good looks had him standing out in the crowd. He was shorter than I thought he'd be. I am 5'9 and he was definitely not taller than I. I stared quite a bit, and debated to ask for a snap, and then reconsidered it as an inappropriate request since he seemed to be enjoying a day out with his friends. Plus Season 1 of this show was how long ago......exactly. Sigh. I totally need to get over my shyness at taking pics and grow some cajones.

If you are into Broadway musicals, you MUST add Ave Q to you list of got-to-see shows. It is hailed as 'muppets on crack,' and I can honestly say that it is certainly not Sesame Street. For some reason, it was in Chicago for only a couple of weeks and I completely missed it then. I am very glad to have had the chance to catch it while in NYC. It is humorous, endearing, and very witty. It is not written in a very 'politically correct' manner as they say, but I think that only adds to its appeal. An additional surprise to this particular show was the performance of Christy Carlson Romano as Kate Monster, the main female lead. Not sure if she is the Kate in every show or just every once in a while.
I have to say that these Disney actors are truly multi-talented. Not only is Christy a great actress (from the show Even Stevens as Shia LaBeouf's older sister, the voice of Kim Possible, etc etc), but she is a talented singer and published writer of a young adult novel. Impressive.
What a great way to have spent a brisk Saturday afternoon in The Big Apple. :o)

The Beckhams & Cruises Go Out To Dinner

We imagine it's difficult enough to coordinate two families meeting for dinner when there's children involved, but when those two families are the Beckhams and the Cruises things are set to end up in mayhem.

And that's just what happened yesterday as, after David and Victoria had enjoyed a matinee performance of All My Sons, the Broadway play Katie is currently starring in, the two families made their way through New York to Manhattan eatery Il Cantinori to share a pre-Thanksgiving meal together (which reminds us - Happy Thanksgiving to all our American readers out there!)

With three kids to contend with, it's a wonder Victoria always manages to look so good, but she managed it again yesterday, wearing a demure grey dress to accompany Brooklyn through the throngs of paparazzi. This left David, looking super smart in a three piece suit and tie, to carry both of Brooklyn's brothers, Romeo and Cruz (my, what strong arms he must have!).

Compared to his pal David, Tom got of lightly on the child care front, leaving Katie to carry the newest style icon on the block, daughter Suri. The three-year-old seemed unusually camera shy, shielding her face from the camera, although her mum was less so, happy to show off her stylish oversized white shirt and tailored trousers outfit.

On a side note, whilst it's usually Tom acting the superhero in his latest blockbuster, earlier in the day David got the chance to play the knight in shining armour. Whilst jostling with her fellow photographers, a female pap got entangled with a bicycle and took a tumble right next to where David was walking. Ever the gentleman, David promptly broke stride (and the hand-lock he had going on with Victoria, who carried on walking) and rushed to the unfortunate pap's aid. How much more do we love him on the back of this? Sigh!

I have no idea why some people are totally into this shit. She looks insane. Her shirt is raised enough to make her almost have a beer belly. I think it’s a shiteous cover. Robert Pattison could have graced it….people are so damn tired of Britney.

Everywhere I go, I see Britney SPEARS IS BACK! No, she’s not back. She is forever gone. She was a butterfly…then she was ripped apart and now people are trying to tape her up. I need to make a mental note to not make comparisons between worn-out celebrities and innocent butterflies. *Sigh*

Looks like "Twilight" hunk Rob Pattinson is really enjoying his time in Hollywood! The 22-year-old actor was spotted drinking (and smoking, tsk tsk) at the Chateau Marmont last night, and it looks like he had a fabulous time. When it was time to call it a night, Rob covered up his luscious locks with a beanie (sigh) and headed home with his pals as well as two ladies. Hmmm, think the girls were just friends, or were they groupies looking to score some love bites? As Rob and his pals left Chateau Marmont, they appeared to be in a playful mood, but Rob wouldn't answer photographers' questions, which has us wondering what happened to the camera friendly Rob we fell in love with! Ah, what I wouldn't give to run my hands through that hair!

SPARKLY ACRYLICS? REALLY?

The always demure Paris Hilton was spotted striking all of her trademark poses on the red carpet of the American Music Awards in LA on November 23, but one thing I noticed stopped me dead in my tracks. I have three horrific words for you. SPARKLY. ACRYLIC. NAILS. I thought Id seen it all, but then Paris has to go and prove me wrong. Leave it to P, she went there. For the rest of her look, it seems Paris was inspired by a giant disco ball, and chose an eye-catching sequined frock for her night out (check out similar dresses, like LaROKs Serengeti Tunic in Silver or their Sequin Patchwork Mini Dress in Grey, or Smittens much chicer Capsleeve Sequins Dress in Black). Accessory wise, Paris chose a large gold ring (similar to Rachel Leighs Nicoli Ring in Gold), oversized sparkly hoops (check out Lana Jewelrys showstopping Ocean Drive Earrings in Tri Gold), and gold heels. My overall thoughts for the look? Too subtle. Stop trying to blend in so much, Paris- add a little oomph to your style to at least try to stand out in a crowd. Sigh. In other Paris news, she is definitely, 100% split from Benji Madden, but reports are claiming that she is trying to win the "rocker" back. A source says, "She feels shes had a raw deal. She thinks some of his friends have been whispering things about her, making him jealous. When she met Prince William in London recently they flirted, but it was all perfectly innocent. Yet Benji thought she was making a fool of him and couldnt handle it any more." Oh Paris- will you ever find love?...

BAD WEEK

Artur Boruc, all up in it: First, the Celtic keeper gets busted for cheating on his wife Kaisa (pictured), with whom he shares a baby son named Alex. Then, he dumps her and shacks up with his mistress, Sara Mannei, who is a Polish pop star. Sara also has a child, and the father has been revealed as having numerous ties with underworld gangsters and other such finger breaking nasties. Oh, and homeboy is now in prison. Now, Artur is even even getting death threats. Yikes.

2010 luxuries, abandoned: Fabio Capello has said that the highest priority for the England team’s World Cup accommodations in South Africa will be the ability of the players to become fit by training at high altitude, and he’s willing to abandon luxurious resort-type surroundings to make it happen. By this, he seems to be saying that he is actually putting team fitness ahead of necessities like shopping, sunning and frothy umbrella drinks. The nerve.

Noemie Lenoir, furry and philandering: The lovely Marks and Spencer model has a dog. She loves this dog. So much, in fact, that she
