Are we prisoners of fashion dictates, or could we consider co-creating new looks with minimal expense? How can local fashion designers sustain themselves by working around and within global and local market forces?

Through aggressive marketing, our individual identity can become effaced by homogenised clothing, a veneer that suggests we are part of a recognisable whole. Trend forecasters, retailers and brand conglomerates launching new styles, fabrics, cuts and colours stoke the coals of peer pressure that conditions us to be seen in the latest ranges. As social beings, we are construed as a collective commodity travelling in a continuum of design renovation that is dictated by a few but embraced by the masses, often with little thought to suitability or personal imagination.

Being seen in the right brand wearing the "in" label of a particular designer neutralises our individuality and leads to a contradiction of the purpose of fashion: individual style portraying human uniqueness; instead, we become fashion clones.

By conforming to seasonal trends, are we not impeding the innovation and growth of young fashion designers emerging in the market? There are a few designers who have created distinctive aesthetics and have steadily built a brand following. These looks are not confined to the examples seen on catwalks at Fashion Weeks events; idiosyncratic, semi-mass-produced, wearable garments are also available.

The old saying, "catch them when they are young" can be applied to fashion education. For example, when experts visit fashion colleges and advise students on the latest European trends - as if these are the unassailably essential forms of good design and as such, critical to design success - are we not diluting their imaginative resources?

Both student and established designers are required to be in touch with global fashion directions, but is it a prerequisite to emulate these trends without any re-interpretation? The colours for 2009 are, according to the style forecasters, moving away from metallic finishes to a more earthy, subdued colour palette; ripped denim might resurge, and for younger women, appropriation of men's jeans (known as "The Boyfriend Jeans") will be in vogue and Deep-V-T-shirts and jerseys could be the 2009 new style for men.

We need to respect the genius of our learner designers, and support them in steering away from reliance on European trends. This information is available for reference, so rather than delivering lectures on trend templates, their curricula should cover instruction in sourcing, assimilating, and interpreting the data, with a view to redefining trends in the local context and according to their own design sensibilities.

The sports brand has moved away from his 'pirata' look and has infused streetwear elements such as bold colors, stripes, and checkers to create and new, inspired look for Rafa.

The Mallorcan Matador will be warming up for the season's first Grand Slam in the Trend Long Sleeve Coverups in charcoal + white (above).

Rafa has decidedly dropped his trademark sleeveless this time around and has been given three different colorways of the new Short Sleeve Top including turquoise + white, white + classic charcoal, and white + neo turquoise. Rafanatics don't despair: the shirt looks slightly fitted and the sleeves short enough to still show off that coveted buff body.

No Rafa outfit would be complete, of course, without his trademark long shorts so Nike has designed the Long Checked Short featuring an extended tab waist in classic charcoal, neo turquoise, and white.

And it seems the top baller has finally ditched his favored Cages for some new, super cool Air Max Courtballistecs in neo turquoise, black/metallic silver/volt, and black/volt/silver.
Jigsaw, the fashion store with the kooky windows and magnificent changing rooms. It’s one of those stores you probably often walk past, have a quick peek through the windows but rarely go in. It is though a fantastic fashion retailer and now it’s online!

Whether it’s cute dresses, soft knitwear or stunning leather goods, Jigsaw is the place. It has a real country feel, an approachable elegance. It’s certainly the place if you’re feeling an Edge of Love style homage or to keep on trend with Gucci’s folkloric inspired looks.

Now with its’ online store, there is no reason not to fall in love with Jigsaw, check out the muted mustards and teals for an on trend look. I am loving the black chiffon French knot dress and the tweed mini skirt. Sadly the footwear is not available online, because Jigsaw shoes are incredible. But they have a great range of super soft leather bags. The knee-high socks are a real nod to Prada and they would make a fab stocking filler or a treat for yourself.

If you prefer to get more mileage out of your wardrobe then definitely head to Jigsaw, it’s great quality and will remain on trend for years to come thanks to it’s classic styling.

Of all the things in the world to happen upon!

We were strolling through the famed plaza and market of Coyoacán in Mexico City on Saturday afternoon when we were enthusiastically greeted by the 30 Seconds to Mars street team.

Yes, the 30 Seconds to Mars street team! A group of hardcore Jared Leto fans who were actually taking to the streets and not just spamming the Internets.

We've never seen a "street team" on the streets before!

We told the super fans we weren't the biggest Leto fan in the world, and they responded that they knew. But they sill snapped some pics. And we just laughed at the hilarity of it all and happily posed with the girls, who were decked out in their 30 Seconds to Mars shirts, masks, bracelets and freakin' flags!

We did and saw so much on Saturday, but our favoritest - by far - was the Frida Kahlo house and museum.

To be able to read the actual love letters she wrote to Diego Rivera - extraordinary!

And, the museum, naturally, has a great collection of Kahlo and Rivera's work.

Our time in Mexico City is sadly coming to an end, but our memories will last forever. Hopefully we'll come back soon!

This collection for men, and now women showed us what the future can look like- a blend of traditional menswear fabrics and silhouettes – wool continental jackets, pinstripe woven shirts– with hunting elements such as riding jackets, hunting trousers with patched knees, and neck ties all styled and cut with a rock and roll attitude. the collection’s connections to the music scene are still apparent– the clothes still had a cutting edge that would suit any rock star– leather MC jackets, pointy boots, and a surprising brocade smoking jacket that was reminiscent of Chinese waiter uniforms from the 70s..

VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards Designer of the Year 2000 Stella McCartney certainly did not disappoint her legions of fabulous young fans who rely on Chloé for the season's hot new trends. But this season, in addition to delivering sexy new T-shirts and plunging bathing suits (with playful pineapple motifs), McCartney explored grown-up territory. Perhaps drawing inspiration from Schiaparelli's inventive chic, McCartney worked graphic horse prints (borrowed from Stubbs and Géricault) into loosely structured diagonal-seam dresses and beautiful jackets with a softly draped triangle shoulder. Skirts were long and relaxed, perfect when paired with lightweight, flouncy off-the shoulder tops. Wide-brim hats and dainty pillboxes with a tulle overlay gave the look a touch of '30s sophistication. More casual pieces included sexy jeans with zipper pockets and metallic horses galloping along the backside, and a T-shirt with strategically placed banana appliqués in the front and the words "Keep your bananas off my melons" in the back.

This was a very strong collection for McCartney, and one that confirms her considerable talent and potential as a major designer.

At the DSquared show, ski met ska as the Caten twins sent looks down the runway that merged a London street style sensibility with the warm, active looks of a ski bum. The boys created an elaborate backdrop to set the mood: a wintry Boystown with fire escapes, a tavern, and a blistering snowstorm. Bleached denim, leather MC jackets, skinny braces and tiny white button front shirts set the London mood while luxurious parkas and chubbies, ski pants and chunky sweaters were all about the slopes. The result was less camp and more saleable than past collections, for sure.
