Snuggle down with winter knits!

It’s getting to that time of year when I’ve started to pull out my jumpers and sheepskin boots. I stare longingly at my duvet and wish to walk out the house wearing it.

Thankfully, knitwear this season looks super stylish and fabulously comfy. I am having a bit of a retro moment and have fallen head over heels for all the patterned folk style knitwear, which has flooded the catwalks and high street. There is something wonderfully kitsch and whether dressed up or down are sure to make those cold wintery days feel a little brighter.

Now I am talking kitsch, I mean the kind of jumpers your great
grandmother may have knitted you and you’d have cried with desperation not to wear. Obviously if you can knit then this is one trend that you can really get your teeth into. If not you can head to the vintage stores, although personally I’m not that keen on pre-worn wool. Otherwise depending on your budget head for the boutiques and high street.

The pictured creation is from Matthew Williamson, it’s girly, cute and retro. But French Connection, Topshop, Miss Selfridge and Oasis all have fabulous cheaper variations.

Choose cropped or shorter styles to wear with indigo jeans or woollen shorts. The tunic lengths will look great with wetlook leggings or pick out a colour and team with some brightly coloured tights. The great thing is this type of knitwear demands a certain throw it on comfortability, so pile on three pairs of socks, grab the bobble hat and pull on those mittens.

The Bashed: Ugg boots

The first Northeast Ohio snow flurries sprinkled my freshly straightened hair as I walked into work this morning. I hate snow with all my heart, but I despise Ugg boots more. And in Kent, OH, snow can only mean a parade of these precipitation-stained ogre shoes.

This post should come with a warning because what you’re about to see may shock, frighten, and/or induce seizures. The new Uggs have just arrived, and they are uglier than ever. This hybrid mix of revolting pink suede that is spewing sheepskin all over the outside of itself has left me speechless. And since we are tormenting ourselves already, I’ve included a photo of my favorite style, the camouflage Uggs.

I’m hoping this little squall is a minor phase in the weather until the end of November. But you never know, so I’m preparing myself for the worst. Because trust me, you’ve never dug your car out of the snow until you’ve done it while the girl beside you in pastel-purple Uggs is whining about the weather into her gem-encrusted cell phone. Don’t fuck with me Mother Nature, it’s too soon.

The curse of the enormous scarf

I have recently invested in an enormous scarf, you know like those ones you see in magazine shoots, which drown the model but nonetheless look incredibly cool. When I say enormous I actually mean gigantic, may take over the world enormous.

Mine is a bright lilac knitted creation from H&M, which is basically a giant loop. I tried an even longer one on but nearly suffocated myself in the process. Now here’s the dilemma, how do you wear a giant scarf without

a) killing yourself

and

b) looking insane

There is something fantastically couture about oversized knitwear, it definitely makes you look skinnier and very on trend. But after you have mastered the art of strangulation avoidance you then need to work out what to wear with such a creation,

It is a statement piece that really would look best with little on, just a retro t-shirt and skinny trousers. But this avoids the purpose of having a huge scarf. Trying it with coats does not look great as it only makes the scarf grow even more, I have decided that it’s probably a leather jacket or blazer job.

If you’re thinking of dabbling in the freakishly large scarf craze then definitely head to H&M, they even have a giant knitted hat. Expect to see these scarves all over the high street, check out Urban Outfitters where the monster as pictured above is from. If you’re still not convinced then why not try a Mongolian sheepskin scarf from Topshop, they’re soft and stylish and Mongolian sheepskin dominated the AW08 catwalks.

Ok, so I’ve got my scarf on, I just need to find my head, help… anyone?
