I have a gap in my front teeth. My jawline is too square (and it’s crooked). My eyes are tilted. My cheekbones are too sharp, and taken all at once my face is very angular and can be quite harsh.   My lips are quite thin and if I’m tired they turn down a lot, not because I’m angry, but because I’m thinking.  If I don’t soften my angles well, I can appear more severe than Minerva McGonagall.  True story.

I don’t look like the generic version of pretty that’s been watered down and passed off as acceptable.  I know that.  I know that I’m not a size 2, and that my chest could be used as a washboard.  My frame is athletic and I have to buy pants two sizes bigger than my top not because my hips are wide, but because I have a bubble butt.

But no one else looks like me.  My features aren’t store-bought or perfect, and I’m okay with that.

I wish more people were.

I saw a woman at a beauty salon today getting foil highlights for her 9 year old.  Full head of highlights for a child barely in 4th grade.  I didn’t say anything but I was sad for the little girl.  I’m sure she wanted the highlights…but why? Why isn’t she, at 9 years old, playing outside with other little girls and playing soccer and hopscotch and all of that stuff?  Why is her mom supporting that at such a young age?

OMG JAMIE YOU’RE A HYPOCRITE BECAUSE YOU’RE A BLOGGER AND YOU’RE SAYING THIS?!??!?

No. I’m not.   I don’t write on this blog to convince readers to conform to a standard of beauty. I write on this blog to offer my (perhaps unsolicited) opinion about different beauty products.  I’ve never said, and I never will say, “Use THIS and you’ll be pretty, popular, and sexy!” or “THIS will make you complete!!”

I would never suggest anyone do anything cosmetically to make other people happy. I would only suggest that we all do what we enjoy, and if someone likes makeup and it makes her happy because she enjoys the artistry of it? More power to her.

I hope that little girl I saw today grows up and loves herself for who she is.  I hope her mom lets her grow up into her own woman, and lets her experiment with life on her own.  I hope her mom teaches her that unconventional beauty can be found in anyone and to enjoy that little distinctiveness that makes her unique.  I hope she realizes that dyeing her hair, wearing makeup, getting her nails done…they’re not tied in directly to who she is.  I hope she realizes that this thing we call the beauty and cosmetic industry is meant to be fun, not spiritually defining.

I love seeing actresses who aren’t cookie cutter pretty. I love seeing a model with a bit of a snaggletooth and a sprinkling of freckles and non veneered teeth and a thin upper lip.  I love seeing women on the street who have their own sense of ownership when it comes to their style and personal presentation.  It’s sexy.  It’s empowering.  It’s a physical manifestation of their own empowerment over their self confidence…and I silently applaud them for it.

So I want to know, my loves, what do you ‘own’?  What makes your face…yours? Do you embrace your uniqueness or do you wish you could change some of it, somehow? If so, why?

I’m not going to lie. I grew up wishing my nose would match my face.  I had a flat face as I was growing up…if you looked at my profile.  Now…I’m glad I never pursued anything to do with changing my features.  Everything is growing together and I’m happy with it.  Finally.

I can’t really understand her weight. It seems to bounce in impossible ways from skinny to overweight in photo shoots away. I’ve seen her recently in two films. In fact two is rather forced because I couldn’t stand seeing The Strangers til the end even if I was curious to see Gemma’s acting. It’s one of those movies where you get a serious overdose of violence with no reason whatsoever. So that leaves me the first movie I saw lately starring Liv and Adam Sandler: Reign Over Me. I have to recommend you this one! It’s truly great! I won’t say another word by fear of spoilers, but do see it! Anyway, Liv’s characters almost always lack substance, she’s rather the same adorable Arwen the Elf princess from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Her characters are almost always based solely on her looks. (I know, I’m always happy when a pretext comes along to share some movies with you, so you have to pardon my lack of style talk for this one!) What do you think of Liv?

Lynn confessed that Brit-Brit started hitting the booze at 13 (she didn’t mind her children drinking as long as she was there - known as contributing to the delinquency of a minor in some circles.) She said that Britney lost her virginity at age 14 to an 18 year old football player (Lynn thought it would make Britney more popular) and that she was doing drugs at the tender age of 15.

Along with these shocking stories, Mrs. Spears also confessed to allowing Britney to share her bedroom with Justin Timberlake when they were dating - she later let Britney’s little sister Jamie Lynne play house with her baby daddy, Casey Aldridge and you see what happened there.

It seems this could have been a one page book called “I suck as a mother” with a prologue that includes a tubal ligation so this woman can’t reproduce again.

I guess she was trying to be “the cool mom” but she just sounds irresponsible. The fact that she’s planning on cashing in on being an idiot and airing her daughter’s dirty laundry is even more disgusting to me.

New mom Jennifer Lopez spoke with Elle magazine about her struggle to conceive and the minute she knew she was pregnant. Lopez and her husband, singer Marc Anthony, are parents to 6-month-old fraternal twins Emme and Max.

On struggling to conceive:“We knew nothing was wrong with either one of us—I had been checked, and he had kids already. I knew Something’s not ready here, in my head or in my life, and when it is, I know it’s going to happen.”

On knowing she was pregnant — before tests confirmed it:“I was sitting down doing hair and makeup and I felt a flutter. The weirdest little… flourish. My makeup artist said ‘What’s the matter?’ I didn’t say anything, but in my head, I was like, I have life inside me!”

University at Albany researchers found when a women is at her peak of fertility, her voice sounds sexier. For the study, men listened to women’s voices during different posts in their menstrual cycle and the women at the peak of their fertility were rated “most attractive.”

Nate Pipitone, a psychologist who was part of the study, told Men’s Health, “Hormones throughout the menstrual cycle change the quality of a woman’s voice, possibly altering the pitch.”

With that in mind, couples may see this as the best time of month for phone sex.
