Today at the section of best electronic gadgets we present you a luxury good from 1940’s. It’s Compass Camera By Jaeger LeCoultre. Few words about the history. The Manufacture Jaeger-LeCoultre was born in 1833 when Antoine LeCoultre, son of watchmaker Jacque LeCoultre, opened a small workshop in the Swiss town of Le Sentier. While Antoine was an excellent watchmaker, he was a brilliant inventor. In 1844 he changed the watch making world forever by inventing the Millionometre, a device that measures with an accuracy of one-thousands of a millimetre. It also spelt the end of chaotic Imperial units of measure and the final ascendancy of the metric system for watch making. Nowadays Jaeger LeCoultre sign can be found on the instrument panels of Bentley, Aston Martin, Lancia Astura, Delahaye, etc.

This compact 35mm camera was one of the most technically advanced gadgets of 1930s. The 1938 advertisement declared Compass the embodiment of scientific system in miniature cameras. “Built like a watch - as simple to use.” A finely-machined aluminum bodied camera incorporating a large number of features in a tiny volume. The Compass used 24×36mm negatives on glass plates or on roll film with optional roll back. Standard accessories included a tripod, cable release with special bayonet mount and processing outfits. The cameras were also engraved in French and German and carried national identifiers opposite the focal distance tab. Price: $1800/$2200.

An Interview with John Ziegler on the Zogby "Push Poll"
From Fivethirtyeight.com

I had the chance this afternoon to speak with John Ziegler, a documentary filmmaker and former radio talk show host who built the website HowObamaGotElected.com and is promoting a forthcoming documentary of the same name.

Ziegler was responsible for commissioning a Zogby International survey of Barack Obama supporters, which took the form of a multiple choice political knowledge test, stating a "fact" to the respondent and asking them which of the four major candidates (Obama, McCain, Biden, Palin) the statement applied to. Because I believe that many of the statements on the survey are questionable or false but are misleadingly presented as factual to the respondent, I characterized the survey as a "push poll" in an article posted early this morning.

Ziegler had contacted me by e-mail, asking if I'd like to interview him; the interview itself was conducted by telephone. Ziegler asked, among other conditions, that I post a full transcript of the interview, which I have. The transcript below is intended to be representative as possible from my shorthand transcript, with the exception of two or three rapid-fire ad-hominem exchanges being edited out. The transcript, however, is not safe for work.

Nate Silver [NS]: Were only Obama supporters interviewed for the [Zogby] survey, or was everyone interviewed?
John Ziegler [JZ]: The reason why I interviewed Obama supporters only is because I’m doing a documentary on the media coverage of the campaign and how the media coverage of the campaign impacted what Obama supporters knew or thought they knew about the campaign. I had planned from day one because I knew that no one would take seriously any random sampling of interviewees that I was going to commission a scientific poll of these questions. I also knew that it would be a lot cheaper for me to do a nationwide survey of Obama voters than the nation as a whole because basically I’d only have to do half the number of people to get a representative sample. When I went on FOX last night, I made a deal that if anyone on the left -- you're more than willing to take me up on this -- wants to ask the exact same deal of the McCain supporters and you get examples that are equal to or worse than the Obama supporters, then I’ll pay for your expense. The point here was not to show that Obama supporters were idiots -- there are plenty of idiots on both sides of the aisle -- but what information they got from the media that they were able to consume.

NS: Do you stand by all the statements in the survey as being unambiguously true?
JZ: I stand one hundred percent by the notion that there is absolutely zero ambiguity as to what the right answer is to any of the questions. With the one exception of the Palin-Russia-Alaska question which we asked the way we did for a very specific purpose which was to try and gauge the Tina Fey Effect which I think we did in a very effective manner which was what was actually said by Tina Fey, everyone attributed to Sarah Plain. But for purposes of scoring Obama supporters’ answers we counted Palin as a correct response.

NS: What was the right answer to that [Palin] question?
JZ: The technically accurate question [sic] is that none of the four people said that, but we counted it as correct if they said Sarah Palin.

NS: Why would you commission a survey question with no correct response?
JZ: The purpose of the question, you pinhead, was we wanted to determine the Tina Fey Effect.

NS: Were the interviews conducted by telephone or online?
JZ: How can you ask a question like that and pretend that you have any clue what you're writing about! That's unbelievable that someone could write what you did! That is unbelievable that you wouldn't know that it's a telephone or an online poll and that you went on my summaries of the questions before the questions were even released!

NS: We’ve heard reports from our readers that very similar questions had been asked in an online format. There was no online component at all?
JZ: That is correct, which you would have known if you had looked at the information. Before you called this a push poll -- you don't seem to know the definition of a push poll. How do you have this website?

NS: Is the complete interview available anywhere -- complete results for the interview?
JZ: Yeah if you had done your research it is all online, every question, all the cross-tabs. Man, you're never going to post this [transcript], are you?

NS: Were the respondents informed of the 'correct' response during the telephone interviews?
JZ: No.

NS: Did Zogby have a chance to preview the questions before agreeing to accept your business?
JZ: John Zogby himself or the company?

NS: Either/Or.
JZ: I am quite certain that if I asked a question they deemed inappropriate they would have not allowed the question to be asked.

NS: What questions were removed from the survey?
JZ: We didn't remove any, we edited some.

NS: What questions were edited?
JZ: Nothing was substantially edited but there was some wording on some that we went over with them. For instance, I think I had inadvertently said “See Russia from my home” instead of “See Russia from my house”. There was a distinction about Obama talking about energy prices versus electricity prices so we corrected that. That’s all that I can recollect.

NS: What did Zogby charge you -- what did you pay for this survey?
JZ: I'm not going to tell you that, I'm not a f*cking idiot.

NS: Did he charge you at his usual rates or did he ask you for extra?
JZ: You'll have to ask them. I'm not going to respond how much money I paid for this. It was substantial but I’m not going to say anything more than that.

NS: In the Youtube video, how were the Obama supporters identified for the Youtube video?
JZ: I had nothing to do with it. I had a person who was working with me who happens to be a black female since you seem to think I’m a racist who was the one that chose all of the respondents based on conversations we’d had prior, people who were well-spoken, thought they were informed, willing to come on camera and [who] voted for Barack Obama.

NS: What was the location of the polling place where the interviews were conducted?
JZ: They were both in Los Angeles.

NS: Okay, that's what I kind of guessed. How many Obama supporters did you speak with in total?
JZ: All twelve we spoke with are in the video.

NS: Was there any significance to the fact that in the YouTube video, seven of the twelve Obama supporters were black?
JZ: [Laughs]. The reason why we had more black supporters – that might surprise some of the people that we spoke to -- if we go by your apparent ability to determine race -- the first location happened to be in a black section of town and we were able to get our interviews faster there because of they way that was set up, because of the logistics. We had a second location but it got dark and we didn't have any lights. So, that's it, it was no grand racial conspiracy.

NS: How did you represent yourself to John Zogby?
JZ: As private company, Death-of-Free-Speech-dot-inc which is the name of a book that I wrote.

NS: Did Zogby give you sign-off on the press release that he released on his website?
JZ: I'm not sure what you mean by sign-off. The press release I had input into, yes.

NS: Did you have financing for the project or was it paid for out of pocket?
JZ: It is not self-financed.

NS: Who paid for it?
JZ: You think I'm going to tell you that? When you've already shown yourself to be the enemy?

NS: Was it paid for by the RNC?
JZ: [Laughs]. In your world, the question that I would ask you is what question [in the survey] is there any ambiguity as to what the answer is?

NS: Well, that Obama 'launched his career' at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground --
JZ: That happens to be one of the questions that Obama supporters did the best on! They did better on that question than on any other Obama-related answers! And here you’re telling me that it’s not true?

NS: What do you mean by "launched his career"?
JZ: The first campaign as told by the person whose position he took in the State Senate, as told by her admission, his first campaign event was in the home of Bill Ayers and his wife. [Laughs] Unless you live in the Obama kool-aid world! That is astonishing to me that you would not accept that! And by the way, when you're given four responses to that question, what else was the response going to be? Sarah Palin?

NS: Well, her husband was a member of a secessionist party.
JZ: You are such a hack! That's a very good analogy.

NS: Do you think that certain types of voters are less well informed?
JZ: I think anyone that looks rationally at these poll results would have to conclude that Obama voters are incredibly poorly informed about major issues that occurred during the campaign -- my guess is because McCain voters got their information from different types of media than Obama voters did.

NS: What types of media would you consider credible?
JZ: I think you need a variety of sources, but I do not accept the notion that if it's not in the New York Times it's not true and if it is in the New York Times it is. Just because Sean Hannity says something doesn't mean it’s not true.

NS: What is Barack Obama’s religion?
JZ: You'll have to ask him. But I do know that he never claimed to be a Christian until he met Reverend Wright. And I do believe -- and I’ve never held this against him -- that it would have been highly unlikely for him not to have been registered as a Muslim as a child in Indonsesia but who cares. He did change his website based on that reality –- he was far more ambiguous about that issue on Fight The Smears. I’m an agnostic so I couldn't care less what his religion is. I just care that he lied about it.

NS: When do you think Obama was a Muslim?
JZ: I think he was likely -- registered as a Muslim between the ages of 6 and 10 while he was going to school in Indonesia. It would have been highly unusual for him not to be.

NS: But would you personally consider Obama a Muslim?
JZ: No, because he was a child. We're talking about two totally different things. There's what religion you're born into and there's what religion you become because of your own decisions

NS: Would you consider Obama a Christian?
JZ: You'd have to ask him. There was never any evidence that he was a Christian until he decided to join the church of a racist hate-monger for political purposes.

NS: Would you not believe Barack Obama if he told you he was a Christian?
JZ: Does he believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God who died and was raised from the dead later?

NS: Do you think he’s a believer in Jesus Christ?
JZ: I have no way of knowing that. I don't think there's any evidence that he is, either.

NS: Do you have doubts about Barack Obama's birth certificate?
JZ: I couldn’t care less about that. I accept he was born in Hawaii.

NS: Would you consider yourself well-informed
JZ: I’d consider myself extremely well-informed.

NS: Who are the two senators from South Dakota
JZ: Thune and, uh, Johnson.

NS: Very good. South Carolina?
JZ: Go f*ck yourself. I'm done with this interview if you're going to ask me stupid questions like that. Obviously I know who Lindsay Graham is.

NS: Well, since you’re running a website calling people misinformed, I’d like to see if -- there are certain things you’ve said that I would consider misinformed.
JZ: Misinformed? You're a piece of work! You are never going to have the guts to post a representative transcript on your website! I thought you actually ran a legitimate website!

NS: Thank you, have a good day.
JZ: Go f*ck yourself.

Think a hefty price tag and adspeak terms like "ionic" and "tourmaline" make for better beauty tools? Think again. ShopSmart, a sister magazine of Consumer Reports, reveals in its January issue that pricier doesn't always mean better. In the article, ShopSmart puts blow dryers, straightening irons, and mascaras in head-to-head combat to find the best "smart splurges" and the budget buys that beat out the big guns.

In the super-scientific blow dryer battle, it was revealed that higher wattage doesn't equal faster drying time, and that higher price doesn't equal better features. Nope. The iconic ionic straightener ($130) was among the nine irons tested, but it didn't crack the top spot. I'm talking great color, great cut, great fit. I was a tad jealous, I must say, even though his men's coat wouldn't fit me. But it got me to thinking about cashmere and what a wonderful fabric it is, surprisingly versatile and oh-so-soft and warm.

The title of today's blog is the scientific name of the cashmere goat (in all its shaggy glory, right), whence derives all cashmere yarns. And while this goat might be somewhat rare and precious, there's no reason not to find stylish cashmere sweaters across a range of price points.

In the $100 spectrum, I wanted to show you the totally fun Halogen Ruffle Cashmere Cardigans, or one of the Halogen Pattern Cashmere Cardigans, but seeing as how those are all but sold old (they were featured in Nordstrom's last mailer), I'll have to settle for the slightly more mundane, yet equally wardrobe-enhancing Halogen Scoop Neck Cashmere Cardigan, available in Asian Plum (shown at left), Black or Pale Heather Grey.

I like this for a couple of reasons. It's lightweight and great for layering which, if you work in an office like mine where we sometimes swelter and other times shiver, is a good thing. Also it's from a Nordstrom house brand - Halogen - that I know produces good quality items that, while they won't become heirlooms, will get you through several seasons. And while the patterned and ruffled versions cost $98, the plain colored one costs $88.

For even less money, you can wear an Isaac Mizrahi for Target Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater in one of a wide range of color selections, including Park Green, shown at right. Available online only and currently on sale for $39.99, this would look so chic underneath a jumper or paired with a plaid skirt and boots.

In general, the reviews for this brand's cashmere are very positive; many reviewers said the fabric felt just as soft as far more expensive brands. I like that there's such a range of colors and other styles - v-necks, cardigans, even capes - available at reasonable price points. Go Isaac!

At a level higher than the Nordstrom sweaters - the level I consider "Completely Out Of My Reach Unless It's Very Deeply Discounted" - stands Vince. I love this line. I think I only own a couple of tank tops from them, though. Maybe a skirt I bought on clearance.

Anywho...Vince's cashmere is like a big soft hug in clothing form and their Cashmere Boyfriend Cardigan is no exception. This will definitely feel thicker and softer than the other two, plus the ombre color scheme really sets it apart. I love the longer hemline (it would look smashing over a dress of the same length) and deep v-neck. Basically, it's perfect. Oh, except for the part where it costs $325. Ouch. Like I said, look for it on sale!

Finally, there's the cream of the crop, the tip of the top, the DCGF's "dream sweater" in cashmere: Lucien Pellat-Finet. I'm partial to the black version with the crystal skull on the front, like the sunglass one at right. I saw one hanging on a rack at a boutique in SoHo when I was in NYC last spring and just about fainted.

There is was, size XL (read: size Medium for the rest of us mere mortals) with the skull, black, perfect, etc., etc. The price? A jaw-dropping $3200. I was scared to touch the thing. But I summoned the courage and found the most luxurious cashmere ever to grace my fingertips. I... want... so... bad...

But who am I kidding? I'll never get a Lucien Pellat-Finet. But who needs one of those when I could just iron a patch onto the Isaac Mizrahi version? Better yet, I'll get one downstairs for $6 and have at it with a Beddazler. Done. I'll let ya know how it turns out. Ha.

Any purchase made at a Goodwill Retail Store or on ebay.com funds Goodwill's mission of training and employment programs for people with disadvantages or disabilities.

Carrying on the Robot theme for no apparent reason is RobotLab’s Bible Scribe.

The installation ‘bios [bible]’ consists of an industrial robot, which writes down the bible on rolls of paper. The machine draws the calligraphic lines with high precision. Like a monk in the scriptorium it creates step by step the text.

Starting with the old testament and the books of Moses ‘bios [bible]’ produces within seven month continuously the whole book. All 66 books of the bible are written on rolls and then retained and presented in the library of the installation.

‘bios [bible]’ is focussing on the questions of faith and technical progress. The installation correlates two cultural systems which are fundamental for societies today – religion and scientific rationalism. In this contexts scripture has all times an elementary function, as holy scripture or as formal writing of knowledge.

In computer technology ‘basic input output system’ (bios) designates the module which basicaly coordinates the interchange between hard- and software. Therefore it contains the indispensable code, the essential program writing, on which every further program can be established.

robotlab works with industrial robots in public spaces. It explores the relationship between man and machine by means of installations and experformances.

robots will play a significant role in future societies and invade more and more human domains. The most prevalent robots today are the industrial robots. Their number is rapidly increasing worldwide and has already exceeded one million. With continual development their mechanical and electronical capabilities grow. The direct coupling of precise mechanics and information processing electronics results in a powerful technology which is discussed in the sciences under the subjects of ‘artificial intelligence’ and ‘artificial life’.

Up until now, people haven’t had the chance to meet robots neither in public nor in private spaces. robots are mostly situated in special industrial spaces, therefore humans do not have contact with them, do not experience how they behave and do not know how to behave correctly with them. Today social patterns between man and machines do not exist. Instead there are only fictional images from science fiction literature and films.

robotlab creates experimental situations in exhibition spaces, in which the public has the opportunity to interact with robots. The massive appearance of the robots, the movements and the machine sounds effect the visitor, are interpretated individually and evoke ideas which may lay in the field of practical purposes as well as formulate an utopian image of a future culture with man and machine.
robotlab is founded 2000 by Matthias Gommel, Martina Haitz and Jan Zappe. The free artist group is associated to the Institute of Visual Media at the ZKM - Center of Art and Media Karlsruhe, Deutschland.

People have used science to make things which are harmful. However, science is essential for development of technology. Far more good has been done by science than bad. Science is a "tool" or method which humans use to explore the the world, or reality. At one time people used mythology and religion to explain their world and science is simply the latest method- it grew because it is more dependable than mythology and religion. But I feel religion still has an important role to play in the growth of the human spirit. 4 hours ago

Asker's Comment: thanks brother
great answer

I don't believe that it is possible for science to be harmful. It is only possible for governments/corporations to abuse scientific advances. Even the atomic bomb, the science behind it is fascinating and extremely clever - It is the US military in the first place, followed too swiftly by various others that are responsible for the evil.

mostly it's our nature to improve or try to improve everything in this world. i think all and any technology can have a downfall to it. everything. Especially computer echnology because when it comes down to it everyone can be tracked and found on the web or some sort of artificial inteligent computer. kewl q!

heh, cellphones, bad drivers, etc.
all of them for the most part are because of the humans behind them.
if you limit the time on the cell phone you dont get radiation poisoning.
If you drive good then you dont die in a car crash.

in what ways has religion proven to be harmful?
that might have been a better question.your local atheist

The misuse of science, I think, is harmful... hence the human race is harmful to the human race. Science could easily be used for world peace, immortality, disease curings, ect... but that wouldn't be allowed to happen unless it was to give much power to the powers that be.

ktownfar... Sanitation aids. Clorox, Windex, Lysol, etc. etc. In the long run they increase the resistance of micro-organisms, making them potentially immune to common cures. If we continue on this path, developing stronger antibacterial formulas without considering consequences, we may have an epidemic on our hands.

According to reports, <del datetime="2008-10-30T18:51:24+00:00">Jennifer Lopez</del> Eva Mendes likes to hang upside down in order to look younger.

It seems the 34 year-old wants to try and keep looking sexy for as long as she can. And, apparently, allowing blood to rush to her head helps deter her signs of aging, so she thinks.

According to a source, “Whether it is a photo session or a hot date, Eva swears by hanging her head down on a slant board for about 20 minutes. Allowing blood flow to your upper body and face will bring on a vibrant, flushed-with-youth look."

We're not sure about the scientific results of doing this, but hey, it beats zipping yourself up in a plastic body bag before bed, like Madonna supposedly does.

No one can stop talking about how bad the retail outlook is. Everyone's worried that no one will buy everything up this holiday season, and already there are reports that buyers are putting in much smaller orders for Spring 09 as compared to past seasons. So this fact might sounds strange: Online shopping is up. In fact, overall, it's up 12% over last year.

WWD attributes this to consumers saying they can find better deals online, can do more comparison shopping, and that the price of gas has informed how much/far they're willing to go for a party dress. Indeed, one could even attribute designers suddenly offering up previously unavailable e-commerce opportunities to their customers (Lutz & Patmos just launched a shopping component to their site, as well as Pucci, and Net-a-Porter continues to score site-exclusives from designers like Preen and Richard Nicoll) as an accommodation to this trend.

But we have another, not at all scientific theory to propose: Shame shopping.
