The events which have occurred in the past week has made me extremely disgusted towards mankind. How can we, being human- having souls and hearts murder other human beings in the masses?

I thought that the war that the US is fighting in would prevent such devastation from happening. The attack on Mumbai has left India shaken and has demeaned of confidence that its leaders can keep them safe and revive an economy.

195 people have been murdered and I have close friends who were actually at the Taj and escaped from this horrible terrorist attack. Taken from bloomberg: Chidambaram, 63, who had been finance minister for the government’s entire 4 1/2-year term, said Nov. 28 the economy will “overcome” the impact of the shootings and blasts in the nation’s business capital. Even as a global recession spreads, he predicted India’s growth would rebound to 9 percent from as low as 7 percent this year.

Honestly, I think that India will rise above this, but India will not back down and turn the other cheek. These attacks have been going on for too long. Many people are pointing at the Pakistanis. But I highly doubt that they ordered these attacks. It is unfortunate that the terrorists were Muslim, because now there will be more animosity towards Muslims.

I don’t even know what else to write, this is absolutely disgusting. And all we can do is pray for these people. We shouldn’t end negotiations with India either. We shouldn’t be afraid. Fear is what the terrorists want to inject into our minds- let’s not give them the satisfaction that we are afraid.

Here is what I am listening to.

Apparently the show flopped, with only 5 million tuning in to watch the NBC special.

Rosie, 46, blogged, “There will b no more. No ratings. Bad reviews. Yet still – a thrill 4 me… If the bloggers didnt like it, I knew it didn’t work.”

The reason for the cancellation was” “Not enough rehearsal. The live part wasn’t a plus. The in-theater experience didn’t transfer to TV. It was a pilot, meaning u try it [and] see if it works. Then if they pick it up, u fix it.”

But variety shows aren’t dead! In good spirits, Rosie says, “Many people r gonna try a variety show. One will work. Ellen tonight. The Osbournes have one. John Mayer. Check them out.”
<!--

It's been another exciting week! Almost comparable to that week in September/October, except no major banks collapse (yet) and there were no big mergers. The DOW finally broke the 8000 point after hovering around it for a month, on Wednesday, tumbling 5.1% in a day to yet another more than 5 year new low. The downward momentum continued into Thursday, until it finally went back up to 8000 levels towards the end of Friday.

The week started off with Pandit's speech at Citi, announcing their plan to cut 52,000 jobs (yike!) and cut expenses by 20%. Citi's share began falling as investors worry that these measures will not be able to revive Citi from its current situation- they lost $20.3 bn in the last year and some don't expect it to be profitable in 2009 as they worry about Citi's exposure to credit card/mortgage losses and toxic debt. On Thursday, Prince Alwaleed of Saudi Arabia announced that he was boosting his shares in Citi from 4% to 5%. That didn't give other investors much confidence (not everyone's Buffet), as Citi shares broke the $5 point that day (a 13 year low). This is a very dangerous level to be at, because many institutional investors are not allowed to own shares below $5 and this could trigger a wave of selling before year end. On Friday Pandit assured employees that he would like to keep the company together and does not wish to spin off its Smith and Barney brokerage unit (their crown jewel I guess?). Still, there are rumors of them finding a merger partner or raising capital in the future. Citi is also pressing members of Congress to put back the ban on short selling, as they claim that it is hurting their stock price. Citi's stock price ended $3.77 on Friday, down from $20 a month ago and $30 a year ago!

Following the lead of Golman and UBS, other Wall Street banks are being pressured to foregoe execute bonus this year. JP Morgan also announced that they will be cutting 10% of their workforce.

The other big driver this week was the auto industry. Discussions started looking bleak on Wednesday (and thus the huge drop on concerns of an even deeper recession if the auto industry collapses), as Congress members continue to bicker with the Big 3. I'm not too sure about the details (cars just don't interest me that much), but it sounds like they're concerned about whether taxpayer's money is going to waste since the auto industry was already not competitive before the this financial crisis and they want to see a sound plan to change them into healthier companies before they come to their aid. I believe the catch phrase of the week is, "You show us the plan, and we'll show you the money." Makes sense to me. They will be meeting again in December for the Big 3 to prove to American that they are worth saving. Oh and they seemed to have came up with a good source of where the $25 bn will come from too. Instead of from TARP, it will come from the money already approved in July to help make more environmentally friendly cars. They will give them this money in advance and the Big 3 will slowly pay back this amount into this pool of funds. Makes complete sense to me. That way, we're not creating extra debt.

Speaking of politics, Bernanke has not been very popular recently. His abrupt change of the use of TARP surprised many, leaving them to wonder what exactly they voted for. His annoucement that he doesn't plan to use the rest of the $350 bn of TARP until Obama's administration comes on board, making one question whether he's given up already. Claiming twice in the last week that the government's efforts have succeeded in stabilizing the financial system does not make it true- especially given the crazy market movement this week.

Another major factor contributing to the drop this week is the Fed slashing its outlook for the economy through 2009. They lowered the 2008 GDP forecast from 1-1.6% to 0-1.3% and forecasts that the economy could shrink by 0.2% in 2009. They also raised their unemployment projections sharply higher to 6.3% to 6.5% for 2008 and 7.1%-7.6% for 2009. In addition, the consumer price index also fell by 1% in October, the biggest drop since 1947, suggesting deflation. Many expect this recession would last longer than the middle of 2009. This is gloomy enough news to send anyone running.

Even Berkshire Hathaway was not immune to this market turbulence. On Wednesday, Berkshire plunged over 12%, its worst day since 1987's market crash. They've been getting a lot of bad press lately, with declining earnings in their insurance operations and stocks. They had 9 straight days of decline after they published their third quarter earnings report. Goldman Sachs and General Electric, Buffet's most recent purchases, also went below the price he got them for. Some suggested that he needed a new crystal ball. But on Friday, it Berkshire bounced by 16%, to $90,000. This week, Berkshire also got over $1 bn for its shares in Anheuser-Busch, a brewer, as the acquisition of it by InBev was formally completed. Buffet says he's not worried. Incidentally, Berkshire also significantly boosted its shares in ConocoPhillips this quarter, indicating that he's bull on oil.

On Friday Obama finally decided on the next Treasury Secretary- Timothy Geithner, the current president of the NY Fed Reserves. This appointment was welcoming news to Wall Street as it rallied back up into the 8000 levels. I'm not going to go into his history but he's had a LOT of experience and is widely seen as a good candidate for the job.

Overseas, Iceland finally got a $10.2 bn loan on Thursday, from the IMF, Dutch, British and the Nordic countries. And did you know that we still had pirates in this day and age? Earlier this week, it captured the Sirius Star, which has an oil cargo of about $100 mn worth. Apparently piracy is still very prevalent these days, there has been a record of 199 since the beginning of the year- most prominently in the Gulf of Aden near Somalia. On Thursday, an Indian navy warship sank a Somali pirate vessel. It's like the Pirates of the Caribbean in modern times!

They've Made a Huge Mistake: Mitch Hurwitz and Ron Howard have closed deals to finally resurrect Arrested Development from the TV trash heap. Series creator Hurwitz is onboard to write and direct the film, with a little help from Howard, who would also presumably narrate. Original soundtrack to be recorded by Dr. Fünke's 100% Natural Good-Time Family-Band Solution. [HR]

The Book of Mila: Mila Kunis has joined Denzel Washington in his quest to save The Book of Eli. The Warner Bros. action-thriller centers on the loner Eli (Washington) who must fight across a wasteland of America to protect a sacred book that holds the key to saving humanity. Kunis will play a woman who starts as an enemy of Eli's but ultimately joins his cause. Because with a face like Denzel's, how could anyone be his enemy? [HR]

Bourne Again: Universal Pictures has struck a deal with the estate of Bourne author Robert Ludlum that gives the studio exclusive rights to Jason Bourne and a first look at all other Ludlum novels. The deal paves the way for more Bourne pics, which were originally imagined as a trilogy but are now being positioned as Universal's answer to Bond films. Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are currently onboard to star in and direct the fourth Bourne, out in 2008. So who takes over Bourne when Damon gets too old? Maybe Haley Joel Osment? He's got nothing else to do. [Variety]

It's a Deal: Warner Brothers has signed a three-year first look deal with Get Smart director Peter Segal and his partner, Michael Ewing. The duo will start with Liam McBain: International Tennis Star and Proper English Geezer, a comedy that follows the rise, fall, and eventual redemption of a fictional eighties British tennis star. [Variety]

What's the Matter With Kansas?: Timothy Olyphant is set to star in The Crazies, a Breck Eisner remake of George Romero's 1973 horror flick. Olyphant will play the sheriff of a small Kansas town where a plane crash lets loose a biological weapon, driving the townsfolk to go insane, die, and elect Sam Brownback to the United States Senate. [HR]

Hoppy Returns: 300 producer Mark Canton has teamed up with Pterodactyl Productions on a pair of moves that revive classic cowboy Bill "Hopalong" Cassidy. The projects will feature a modern revival of the cowboy who William Boyd played in 66 films throughout the thirties, forties, and fifties. "We're looking to ring in the modern age with a branded, well-loved hero that we approach in a fresh way," Canton said. Plus, if there's one sure thing at the box office these days, it's a western. Rococo developed first in the decorative arts and interior design. Louis XV's succession brought a change in the court artists and general artistic fashion. By the end of the old king's reign, rich Baroque designs were giving way to lighter elements with more curves and natural patterns. These elements are obvious in the architectural designs of Nicolas Pineau. During the Régence, court life moved away from Versailles and this artistic change became well established, first in the royal palace and then throughout French high society. The delicacy and playfulness of Rococo designs is often seen as perfectly in tune with the excesses of Louis XV's regime.

The 1730s represented the height of Rococo development in France. The style had spread beyond architecture and furniture to painting and sculpture, exemplified by the works of Antoine Watteau and François Boucher. Rococo still maintained the Baroque taste for complex forms and intricate patterns, but by this point, it had begun to integrate a variety of diverse characteristics, including a taste for Oriental designs and asymmetric compositions.

The Rococo style spread with French artists and engraved publications. It was readily received in the Catholic parts of Germany, Bohemia, and Austria, where it was merged with the lively German Baroque traditions. German Rococo was applied with enthusiasm to churches and palaces, particularly in the south, while Frederician Rococo developed in the Kingdom of Prussia. Architects often draped their interiors in clouds of fluffy white stucco. In Italy, the late Baroque styles of Borromini and Guarini set the tone for Rococo in Turin, Venice, Naples and Sicily, while the arts in Tuscany and Rome remained more wedded to Baroque.

In England Rococo was always thought of as the "French taste" and was never widely adopted as an architectural style, although its influence was strongly felt in such areas as silverwork, porcelain, and silks, and Thomas Chippendale transformed English furniture design through his adaptation and refinement of the style. William Hogarth helped develop a theoretical foundation for Rococo beauty. Though not intentionally referencing the movement, he argued in his Analysis of Beauty (1753) that the undulating lines and S-curves prominent in Rococo were the basis for grace and beauty in art or nature (unlike the straight line or the circle in Classicism). The development of Rococo in England is considered to have been connected with the revival of interest in Gothic architecture early in the 18th century.

The beginning of the end for Rococo came in the early 1760s as figures like Voltaire and Jacques-François Blondel began to voice their criticism of the superficiality and degeneracy of the art. Blondel decried the "ridiculous jumble of shells, dragons, reeds, palm-trees and plants" in contemporary interiors. By 1785, Rococo had passed out of fashion in France, replaced by the order and seriousness of Neoclassical artists like Jacques Louis David. In Germany, late 18th century Rococo was riduculed as Zopf und Perücke ("pigtail and periwig"), and this phase is sometimes referred to as Zopfstil. Rococo remained popular in the provinces and in Italy, until the second phase of neoclassicism, "Empire style," arrived with Napoleonic governments and swept Rococo away.

There was a renewed interest in the Rococo style between 1820 and 1870. The English were among the first to revive the "Louis XIV style" as it was miscalled at first, and paid inflated prices for second-hand Rococo luxury goods that could scarcely be sold in Paris. But prominent artists like Delacroix and patrons like Empress Eugénie also rediscovered the value of grace and playfulness in art and design.
Although in the above article Rococo is mainly indentified with interior deco and art, it also dominated fashion, which became heavily ornamental and over-the-top. Rococo was the first time women's dress reached the same level of ornament as men's. It is the period we attach such characters as Madame de Pompadour and Marie Antoinette and their fashions to.
