Steven Seagal continues to find work in straight-to-video productions wherein bad guys standing near him fling themselves through plate-glass windows, while fellow throat-puncher Jean-Claude Van Damme looks to reinvent himself in the recently released JCVD. It's Jason Statham, though, who has inherited the go-to status as the gruffly charismatic star of various gritty, hand-to-hand-combat action flicks, cracking skulls in movies like Crank, Chaos, War and Death Race. His latest film is Transporter 3, in which he reprises his role as Frank Martin, a high-end, black-market courier who gets mixed up in various no-good situations. Sharply dressed in just the sort of fancy-man duds that inspire thoughts of an action scene breaking out at any time, Statham spoke with Vulture recently about his unlikely path to acting, the enigmatic possible sequel to The Italian Job, and being attacked with an ax.

Was the success of the first Transporter, particularly on DVD, a surprise to you?
You know what, I'm so naïve to what people want that I was just jumping up and down at the opportunity to do something like this. Now here's me trying to throw myself out of a plane and fight ten guys — I love all that. I didn't care if the movie sucked or was good. I knew it would be good because anything that Luc [Besson] puts his magic wand to usually has a certain standard. Then again, having said that, you don't know if there's an audience for me. They could say, "Yeah, we liked the movie okay, but the bald-headed guy sucked."

I know Corey Yuen’s back to handle the action scenes again, but you weren't attacked with an ax in this film, as in the first two. I kept waiting for the other ax to drop.
I thought that some of the fight sequences in the first one were much better, you know? We had a little bit more prep time, and on the second film, we were up against it when we got to Miami. We had hurricanes and got a bit shortchanged on the time. But no ax sequence this time — who said we were repetitive! [Laughs]

What sort of action should we expect this time, then?
I'm fighting ten guys in a garage, and then there's the scene where I'm doing some sort of twisted striptease while trying to beat up a dozen thugs. It's quite comical, almost.

That was one for the ladies. You're also a former British National Team diver, so how was filming the movie's underwater sequence?
That was a bit of a bastard, that sequence, because we lost a location for some reason, and so next thing you know, you have one night to shoot this sequence, and it's like, Really? We had a couple cameras that didn't arrive, so we were left with this big, monstrous thing that they film underwater documentaries with. It was 200 pounds, and they couldn't really move it fast enough to get some of the camera moves that we wanted. So that was a difficult day — maybe the most difficult part of the entire thing. But the water, to me, is a piece of cake, it's almost like I've got gills anyway.

Was mixed martial arts something you were into before becoming an actor?
Listen, I've always liked boxing, I've always liked kickboxing, K1, Pride Fighting, UFC, men's Pancrase [hybrid wrestling] from Japan. They're all fantastic events to see, and I've always had a great interest in them. It's completely different than what we do in the movies. We're doing ridiculous stuff, and they're doing practical stuff in a fighting environment. So it's a little bit more stylized, what we do, and a little bit less dangerous.

You've had a pretty unusual path to acting, haven't you?
Hey, it's nice to have a dream and a goal in life, but, yeah, I just didn't see it, I really didn't. I was working on the street selling perfume and jewelry, and to fantasize about working in action movies in Hollywood didn't make sense to me. I'm more of a realist. But I was lucky enough to get that leg up. Then I knuckled down and took it seriously.

On IMDb, an announcement of Italian Job sequel, The Brazilian Job, has lingered for five years now. Can you tell us if it is being made or not?
The sad part about it is that we'd all like to do it. I'm sure Seth [Green] would, I would, Mos Def. Guys like to work, don't they? Actually, I'm sure Charlize [Theron] would too — we had a good time making that film. It's sad, whatever is creating the stickiness to getting that off the ground. But no one's gotten an offer yet, though I know there's a script that's been floating around for quite some time.

A film that is happening, though, is The Expendables, with Sylvester Stallone and Jet Li.
I'm doing that next year sometime. I'm happy to be alongside someone like Stallone — he's a great guy. He's written it, he's directing it, and he's going to star in it. There are talks of shooting in Costa Rica, or somewhere like that.

I'm normally a fairly deliberate shopper. I'm also fairly methodical in my approach: Each season, I review the collections of my favorite designers, draw up a wish list, assess my existing wardrobe to see how new pieces will potentially complement what I already have and then revise my wish list accordingly. I then scratch those items that seem repetitive or too trendy and I'm left with a reasonable list which usually comes within my budget (most of the time). All in all, it's a method that serves me well. This is not to say that I don't succumb occasionally to impulse buys (my weaknesses are shoes and belts) but even then, they tend to be pretty successful additions to my wardrobe. So, on the whole, I consider myself a pretty disciplined shopper.

One would think that the habits described above would serve me well in tough economic times. Yet, all this chatter about job losses, global recessions and overall misery actually makes me want to shop more than ever. I even find myself experiencing a weird sense of deprivation and overall dissatisfaction for not shopping. There's no rational basis for this - I've already purchased those elements of the Fall/Winter 2008 collections I had earmarked including a few pieces for the usual round of holiday parties. More interestingly, I've noticed that this strange elusive feeling occurs in relation to items I would not be caught dead wearing - in other words, stuff I would never even consider buying in the first place. How strange is that? I could understand a feeling like this if I desperately wanted or needed an item I couldn't afford to buy. But this is not the case. The only plausible explanation I can offer is that it's 'misery by association' or an acute sense of empathy for those who are being squeezed. Are you feeling it too? Of course, this could also be the first sign of early onset senility.

Sincerely,

The Luxe Chronicles

Beaded Bead Jewelry by Lisa Gastelum

Lisa is self-taught in the art of making beaded beads, and has been making them for about 12 years. Each bead she creates is hand-woven in the traditional gourd stitch. It takes between 15 minutes to 5 hours to make one bead, depending on the size, shape, pattern, and texture. Each bead has a wooden core and the woven beads conform to the shape.

Knotted Dots Bracelet - Cote d Azur
This striking string of beaded rounds, a textural treat for your wrist, has a soothing flow of shades from faded denim, ocean, peacock, bark, Dijon, and mushroom. Bracelet measure 7.5" in length. Knotted on genuine leather, it is meant to wear snug. Will fit a 6.25" or smaller wrist size. Each of the 12 beaded rounds measure 13mm in size. Taken from tranquil water and warm sands, these inspiring colors will work with any ensemble in your wardrobe.
$148

Lisa first became interested in beads when she was 12 years old, when her mother gave her a beaded rope necklace that she no longer wanted. It had hundreds of little beads in different colors, which fascinated her. She promptly took the necklace apart and started to make wonderful things.

Silver Wishbone Pendant with Beaded Beads
A sterling silver wishbone is dressed-up with three colorful beaded beads that cascade from small, half-hammered sterling silver links in this handcrafted necklace. The silver wishbone and the silver links and beads make a really different and dynamic pendant when suspended from a slim sterling silver ball chain. The beaded beads are in the rich earthy tones of Dijon, tangerine, and crimson, and they range from 1/2" to 3/8" across. The pendant hangs close to 2" from the 18" chain.
$71

As her experience grew, she wanted to make something more permanent. Something that could be worn and passed down. She realized that her main interest was with a needle and thread, so weaving came naturally to her. She found this repetitive action very meditative and tranquil, and wanted to incorporate weaving into wearable art, and she has with the beaded bead.

Five-Dot Ladder Earrings - Her Majesty
In earthy undertones with a hint of berry-red, these beaded beads are hinged together with bar and link chain. These five colors: champagne, linen, sangria, root beer, and scarlet create a beautiful neutral palette. Five beaded rounds at 8mm each hang 2.75" from handmade ear wires. All oxidized sterling silver parts.
$76

Lisa has been making beaded beads for over 10 years now. She is self-taught in the art of bead weaving, and has developed a system to create these textural rounds, ovals, squares, cylinders, and barrel shaped beads. She meticulously weaves each tiny seed bead in the traditional gourd stitch, and each woven sphere contains anywhere between 50 and 700 individual beads.

She also creates many of the metal components, because she found it more and more difficult to find the exact part that reflected the look she wanted for her jewelry. So she started making parts that conveyed her aesthetic, and found it so much more satisfying to fabricate, for example, a beautifully designed ear wire.

Lisa loves to experiment with color, design, and construction in order to create jewelry that is beautiful, tactile, and that gives the owner a greater appreciation of beadwork.

Lauren Conrad was spotted heading into the Ed Sullivan Theatre to film a segment for "The Late Show with David Letterman" in NYC on October 27, followed by a date with her new main squeeze, Kyle Howard, at The Buddakan Restaurant later that evening. To snag Laurens look, start with a cute cropped leather jacket, like Gold Hawks Belted Leather Jacket in Moonless Night, over a ruffled white blouse (check out Gold Hawks Sleeveless Solid Ruffle Top in White Essence) and tucked into ultra wide leg trousers (like Lotta Stenssons Linen Palazzo Pant in Black). Accessory wise, Lauren grabbed her trademark small Chanel bag, a gold coin necklace (similar to Maya Brenner Designs Santorini Coin Necklace), and the studded belt that Sarah Jessica Parker made famous when she wore it playing Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex and the City Movie (for an equally awesome studded belt, check out Rough Roses Multi Studded Belt in Black). Conrad then finished her look off with those flowing, wavy locks of hers. What do you think of Laurens look- love it or lose it? A few days later, Lauren was back in LA to hit up the Pur Jeans Halloween event held at STK and Coco Deville, rocking a flapper costume, complete with a fringe dress and feathers in her hair. She told one interviewer that she is a flapper ever year, but changes her dress and the costume a little every time. The interviewer then said that "is lame!" What do you think- is Laurens repetitive costume lame or loveable?...

It was a good week for the markets this week. The DOW went up 11.3% for the week- the biggest one-week gain since October 1987 (also the time of the last market crash) and it was generally very positive globally too.

It's actually kind of strange seeing as there wasn't exactly any positive news coming out this week. The GDP data came out and we are officially in a recession with an annual GDP decline of 0.3% in the third quarter. It is expected to continue until at least the first quarter of next year. The consumer confidence index is at an all time low, since they started tracking it in 1967. It fell from 61.4 to 38 in a month- the third steepest drop. Companies continue to report declining earnings. The only highlight is that as a result there are some amazing sales out there. Saks is already taking EXTRA 40% off already reduced items- I got something at 70% off today! If only I had the capital to fully utilize the opportunity. Maybe the market is just so used to all this stuff by now that it has already been factored in and now everyone is just looking for a bargain.

One piece of good news was the Fed cutting its rate again this month by another 0.5% to 1%. Experts were not expecting it to help much, but since the market reacted very positively, I guess they were wrong. The rates are expected to hold from now- or so I hope. They've got to save something in case of an even rainier day- or month! Another factor contributing to the positive market may be because some of the government actions are finally taking effect. The commercial paper lending program started this week, and I heard it's doing quite well. There are signs that the credit market is finally thawing. JP Morgan also announced that they are halting home foreclosures for 90 days and modifying loan terms to help those living in the home and show a "willingness" to pay, which is very nice of them.

Then there is the upcoming elections next week. Historically, regardless of who wins, there will be a rally in the market as investors are more "sure" of the future. From the looks of it, Obama seems like he is half way into White House. Personally I'm not very up to date with the intricacies of politics, so I don't know what the winning of either will mean for the economy. But for those of you who are not sure to which camp you belong to, I did stumble upon an interesting quiz on ABC, where they sum up each candidate's views on certain issues. I am surprisingly more of a Republican than I thought- I got 6 to 7 for Obama. Close call! I guess you have to be a little Republican to be a capitalist.

Employment data will also be coming out next week, where more unemployment is expected. And in the coming weeks, we can also be expecting news of a $600 billion bailout for troubled home loans (which sounds a bit repetitive of what JP Morgan is already doing) and another stimulus package worth $300 billion (tax cuts!). The government is seriously on a serial spending spree!

We all love magazines but love hurts sometimes. A magazine we once thought amazing can become redundant, repetitive and banal in a matter of issues. Time has come to point out the worst offenders, predict when the good times will be over at the current fashion darlings and talk about why mendacity has taken over in favor of innovation.

So, which magazines do you think have jumped the shark? And why?

I think Pop is a good example of a magazine that was tip top for very long but the second Mert and Marcus left it was over. I cite the Stephanie Seymour issue as the moment when the magazine became officially non-essential. The multi-cover issue made up for it in some respects but honestly it lacked kick. There was a lot of good content but there was also the sense that the magazine was ending in some ways. This new issue with Drew Barrymore looks like a trainwreck and a half but we'll see when it hits newsstands.
