In the high school pantheon of designers, Dr. Chanel is the in-control principal, Mr. Lagerfeld is the mysterious superintendent, Ms. Von Furstenberg is the wise favorite teacher, Donatella is the bad...

In the high school pantheon of designers, Dr. Chanel is the in-control principal, Mr. Lagerfeld is the mysterious superintendent, Ms. Von Furstenberg is the wise favorite teacher, Donatella is the bad girl playing hooky, Ralph is the classic quarterback, Marc is the prom queen, Kate and Laura Mulleavy are the strange but cool girls in art class, Stella is the earnest, slightly annoying activist … and then who’s that freak sitting there alone in the corner?

Yeah, the shy, fey, emaciated weirdo wearing some sort of Edward Scissorhands punk-goth getup that makes Lagerfeld look like a sweet old biddy in lacy doilies. The one kindly but intently ignoring Ms. Von Furstenberg’s lectures, making some sort of very intense origami construction with the plastic from his binder, a sheet of black tire rubber from the high school parking lot, a razor and a match.

That nobody there’s Gareth Pugh, and you’ll know him now by the 2008 ANDAM Award blinding you from his ratty black tee.

Revenge against popular culture is sweet, and a dish best served cold. The Central Saint Martins designer is not malicious and in fact comes across as sweet and shy, but sometimes you get the feeling that ole Gareth is playing a joke on all of us, an extended prank that he’s seeing how long it will take us all to get.

Almost everything Gareth makes could be a circus tent/vent disaster on black-and-white platforms. Witness below a piece I love but almost any other designer would probably mess up royally:

Gareth can also do sexy, in his own strange way:

The saving grace from his pieces of weirdness are that they’re done so incredibly well; the vents are so fantastically, precisely done, the silhouettes are so bizarre and masculine a la Storm Trooper chest shield/body armor, the long Elizabethan ruffs are so architecturally stable, and then he goes and says things like: “It’s kind of that essence of beauty, that duality… A flower looks the most amazing just before it’s about to die.” In Hint Magazine in 2005, he was quoted as saying that his skirts were “about the struggle between lightness and darkness, like Nancy Kerrigan versus Tonya Harding.”

How could you not love a designer who says something like that? But in this case, the bite of reality is stronger than the bark of mythos, and Gareth really follows through on what he says.

Let’s take a closer look at a couple samples from Gareth’s first shoe collection.

Simple, but perfect. And the accentuation on the appropriate legwear (black and white tights that are a fluid part of the shoe, nearly indistinguishable) and makeup (black solid lashes that are white on the sides) definitely reinforces the fact that a shoe can be subtle in color but still shout its presence from the rooftops if you play it right. It makes me think of Chanel’s classic black shoes with white cap toes, worn with black tights, so that the whole leg was black except for a tippy-toe of white peekaboo. Designers are saying, let’s think beyond our shoes to the perfect legwear for each pair.

The most fantastic thing about these shoes is that they are black and chunky in the back, warping into a whole other shoe when you see them from that angle, complemented by tights that are black in the back. It’s all about perception with Gareth’s work, shading and depth and angles and proportion. Storm Troopers plunging into a visual wrinkle in time and space.

But Gareth, I believe we can see weirder, more whimsical, more fantastic, both darker and lighter in shoes from you. And yes, that’s a challenge from an ardent fan.

Winter is among us, and we can ALL use a little help. We turned to Kayla Fioravanti, Chief Formulator, Registered Aromatherapist and co-founder
of Essential Wholesale and von Natur, for some of her tips on saving our skin, no matter what our climate or skin situation:

Cleanse:
Winter is the time of year when you need to put away your foaming and soap cleansers and stock up on crème cleansers. Cleansing crèmes, lotions and milks are very effective cleansers and they do not contain the typical surfactant or detergent ingredients that most cleansing gels contain which can be too harsh on your skin in the winter months.

Tone:
Put away your astringents and switch to a toner for winter. Your skin needs to be soothed and balanced and not dried out further by an astringent.

Moisturize:
Choose heavier crèmes in the winter than you would in the summer months. Feel free to use your heavy eye crème around your lips and entire face. If your skin is itching it is because the dry air of winter is causing the moisture in the top layer of your skin to evaporate quickly. You will need to slather those areas with extra moisture until you feel relief. Never be afraid of using pure oils on your skin in the winter months. A bottle of jojoba oil or olive oil is a great thing to have on hand all winter. During the cold and flu season you should wash your hands liberally but be certain to apply a heavy hand crème every time you wash your hands.

Exfoliate:
Exfoliate twice per week to remove dead skin cells and allow your skin to absorb the extra moisture you are lathering on. The central heating plays havoc on the sebum our skin normally produces, which makes our skin lose water which should be retained in the lower dermis of the skin. Have you ever wondered about the areas of your skin that looks like your skin is flaking off your body? What happens is that during the winter months there are thousands of dry skin cells ready to be sloughed off the surface and they become clumped together with oil which forms what appear to be flakes. Don't be flaky, exfoliate! Exfoliate your skin with crème based exfoliates with jojoba beads and your body will soak up the rich oils of a butter or oil based body scrub.

Hydrotherapy:
For a simple in home hydrotherapy, start out your day with a hot steamy shower and just as you are finishing switch the water to cold for about fifteen seconds. Repeat the process for two minutes. This hydrotherapy technique will revitalize your skin by stimulating the flow of blood through the skin.

In the Shower and Bath:
One of the greatest times to apply body oil or creme is right after a hot bath or shower, but did you know you can apply any oil, lotion or creme while you are in the shower or bath. You can even use your hair conditioner all over your body for soft and supple skin. The heat and steam from the shower allows your skin to thoroughly absorb moisture. Once you bring your body oil, lotion and creme into the shower try shaving with them. The rich oils protect your skin and give your razor a perfect glide. After you try it you might never go back to shaving with soap or shaving cream.

Southerners turned New Yorkers Hunter Hill and Perry Moore kept a picture of Sissy Spacek tacked on the wall while they wrote Lake City, a southern drama about a reunion between a mother and son years after a family tragedy. They got her to star, along with Troy Garrity (Jane Fonda’s son), Rebecca Romijn, Drea De Matteo, and, oddly enough, Dave Matthews. Lake City hit theaters on Friday, the same day as some vampire-themed blockbuster. Hunter and Moore, partners in life as well as in business, spoke to Vulture about co-directing on a shoestring budget, the Maurice Sendak documentary they're making with Spike Jonze, and Showtime's gay-superhero show based on Moore's novel.

This story is based on an actual childhood experience of Hunter’s. What made you decide that this would make a good movie?
Hill: Well, the story, the crux of the movie were fragmented images that I had from childhood, from my best friend. He died in a very similar way as in the movie. Just watching the family, how different families handle death, you know — some people run from that, some people embrace it.

You spent several years writing this and then got a commitment from Spacek. What if she had turned you down?
Hill: Sissy was the inspiration. We went down to visit Sissy in Virginia, had lunch, she had read the script, and she responded to the very personal situation herself, because she had also had some friends in similar situations.

I heard Spacek brought her own furniture to the set, and Rebecca Romijn used her own clothing?
Hill: Yeah. We shot on a modest budget and the house in the script was always a central character, and it was so important that we find the right place. Every other house we looked at was up and running, and the one we chose was an abandoned house — no running water, no electricity, we only could use half the house. It was empty. So Sissy, and Jack Fisk, who’s her husband —

Moore: Jack is a renowned production designer in his own right [he’s Oscar-nominated]. And Hunter had a panic attack a few days before we started shooting that there wasn’t enough furniture in the house, so Sissy and Jack loaded up their truck with a lot of her own childhood furniture.

Hill: It was a whole flatbed truck full of furniture. The bed in Clayton’s room, the boy’s room in the movie, that was Sissy’s childhood bed. She told stories how she used to walk it back and forth like a balancing beam when she was a little girl in Texas.

Moore: Troy [Garrity] found [Spacek’s] daughter’s diary in it when we were shooting a scene one day. We quickly gave it back to her. I mean, talk about Method acting.

How is it working as two directors?
Moore: We split up the work. We’d make sure that as two directors, we always spoke to the crew and the cast in one voice. It was a luxury, I think. It’s funny when people ask, “What’s it like with two directors?” I always feel like, What’s it like with one director? How do you have time to get all that stuff done? It’s probably easier since Hunter and I live together and do most things in our life together. We sort of have telepathic communication, I think, at this point, that makes it easier to do things together. I think that’s probably an advantage, working together.

Tatum O’Neal was originally cast in the role that Drea De Matteo played?
Moore: Tatum was shooting a series. She was supposed to do it, and she thought she’d be finished in time, and then she wasn’t.

Hill: And then we went right to Drea. She almost channeled Tatum in a crazy way. And, she came in, with the flu. She was there for one night, it was pouring down rain, she was on antibiotics.

Moore: And we had one lamp to knock over in that scene. We did a couple takes, and she was the engine that turned that scene. It was a very long take, and a very emotionally tense moment, and she had to knock this lamp over in the exact same spot without breaking it every time, and she did it every time.

It was just announced that Showtime picked up Hero, your book about a gay superhero, for a series to be produced by Stan Lee. Have you started working on the script?

Moore: Oh yes, we’re in the middle of it. That, and the next book, I’m hard at work on that too.

Is that a sequel to Hero?
Moore: We have a sequel to Hero, and another book, called The Way of the Wolf Book 1: Fire, which is a little more in the vein of Twilight. It’s a new fantasy series. I like rewriting mythology — C.S. Lewis was good about this, too — and I am rewriting the werewolf mythology. I combine a lot of American folklore, French folklore, Japanese folklore. I center it around the triplets, a young girl and her two brothers.

You are co-directing a documentary on Maurice Sendak with Spike Jonze. When will that be out?
Hill: We’re in the edit stages now. Maurice is a fascinating character, and people don’t know much about his personal life.” Maurice is an 8-year-old in an 80-year-old’s body. He’s just razor-sharp and really funny. So we’re very excited about that.

Moore: Maurice’s favorite actress is Sissy Spacek.

Hill: When we were shooting Lake City, he asked if he could come. He said, “Couldn’t I be the little Jewish man that runs a little cart in the small town?”

Moore: It was beautiful.
I just took a regular bottle of baby oil and mixed it with scented oil from brambleberry.com, just for a little extra ooh, aah
a few squirts into warm/hot running bath water, soak in it for a few minutes (yummy!) and shave your legs with nothing but the bathwater.
The razor clogs up a bit more, so you have to tap it, rinse it, change it (whatever everyone does) more often than normally, but I have the smoothest legs on the planet!

Well maybe not like Wonder Woman's..... hehehe

Just a quick tip I thought I'd share, is all

How far would you go to get Brooke Shields-quality eyebrows? Some women who have put their brows through the virtual ringer via waxing, tweezing, and shaving are turning to brow transplants for arch salvation. Not a far cry from scalp hair restoration (think Hair Club For Men), eyebrow transplants take hair follicles from "donor areas" (usually at the back or sides of the scalp)and use them to fill in patchy spots, add thickness to overplucked arches, or replace long-gone brows altogether.

Not ready to take that extreme of a plunge? Keep your arches golden — and resist the urge to take them past the point of no return — by investing in a shaping kit from Anastasia of Beverly Hills ($75). Anastasia's kit contains stencils to keep you in line and prevent overplucking, natural-looking powder liners, and an invisible gel to banish patchiness.

And if nabbing those little hairs below the brow line is what always gets you in trouble, pick up a Trim & Shape Brow Grooming Tool from Ardell ($3.50 for three).
In the midst of the pending presidential election, economic woes and retail panic that has consumed the US for the past two months, somehow I missed Natasha Bedingfield making an out of character appearance at Max Azrias Spring 2009 show at New York Fashion Week on Sept 9. At first glance I thought the mod color block dress was a nice pick compared to Nats usual taste, but the contrast banded sleeves and the razor sharp hem above the knee do nothing but cut off her appendages... which, lets face it, are a bit chubby cherub-esque. If you like the contrasting look, try a more flattering cut like Black Halos Color Block Detail Bodice Dress in Grey or take it a step further with Tricia Fixs Siva Cocktail Dress in Snake. Deciding to add the classy black patent pumps was a good choice, but the hot pink nail polish and funky graphic clutch? A bit of a clash, not to mention the short heart necklace reminiscent of a little girls locket. A solid colored clutch like Posse New Yorks Natalie Clutch in Fuchsia and a more elegant heart necklace like Michele Michels Smoked Quartz Necklace with Beads and Heart in Smoke would have pulled the look together. Im a little confused by what she was trying to achieve here, but hey, at least she has that gorgeous engagement ring to flash to the press! If you havent heard about it, Natasha shared her exciting news with fans on her blog, I miss my fiance...oh yeah by the way if you didnt know already I got engaged!!!!! All my friends have been finding out about my news from pictures of me and my sparkly ring on the Calvin Klein red carpet. You may ask Why do I miss Matt right now? Well, he is presently hiking his way to the Everest base camp with my mum who is going to be sky diving really soon... I am really glad he is out there with her to make sure she is safe and also to film it so we all get to view the journey later. Oh yes, the infamous charity sky-diving challenge! Natashas mom was set to break a world record for highest jump, but given her crippling fear of heights and the lack of press about the jump going through, I have to wonder -- wheres that video??...

The Instantaneous Everything, a new exhibition by Ian Monroe, which taking place between October 31 and December 20, 2008, at Haunch of Venison, Berlin.

The show name comes from an earlier work by Monroe, and plays with the proposed notion of a single identifiable moment in which the entirety of a universe comes into being - both real and imagined. Drawing on a number of sources, including the writings of the Russian philosopher P.D. Ouspensky, the architectural propositions of Super Studio and the attempts by 16th century German astronomer, Johannes Kepler, to unify the known universe through geometry, Monroe’s meticulously constructed, large - scale collages on paper, in either monochrome or highly contrasting textures and hand-cut vinyl images simultaneously embody and question our collective desire to build structures and generate systems of order.
Monroe’s world is intentionally one that exists at the very sharp transition between an order that we can flourish within and one that has no room for the unpredictability of consciousness. This contradiction is evident in the discrepancy between the tactile and sensuous quality of the materials used and the booby-trapped perspectives, razor sharp edges and apocalyptic skies depicted in the images. Monroe’s work, which examines both conceptual and visual possibilities, invites us to explore with him the questions we all have about the real and imagined space in which we exist
Wild visual representations of the compression of both time and space….

I would love to see what he would do using Ponoko’s laser cutting services.
