“Love At First Light” is the tagline…and it’s easy to see how the Swarovski Crystals’ marketing gurus came up with the motto for an opulent traveling exhibit of designer dresses and nuptial accoutrements all splendidly bejeweled.

The nano-second we walked into the exhibition space in the Intercontinental Hotel-elegantly staged for New York’s Bridal Week, our jaws dropped at the magnificence of it all.

And although we could not attend the Wednesday eve Press Presentation, we were able to languidly view the exhibition without the crowds----the only way to go.

We chatted with two super nice Swarovski marketing reps that clued us in on how this luscious presentation came to be…

Apparently, all of Swarovski’s international offices from such far-flung capitals such as Dubai, Sydney and to New York, pitched their designers of choice to collaborate with the company in bridal gown and wedding essential confections.

The final word on who’s in (or out) went to Stephen Todd, Editor of the glossy must read CRYSTALLIZED™ magazine.

The top fashion designers that had their creations on display include Vera Wang, John Galliano, Reem Acra, Vivienne Westwood, Giorgio Armani, and Phillip Lim.

What will happen to these works of art- that any gal would love to say “I Do” in –hasn’t been decided-according to the ladies we spoke with.

Here’s hoping that the museum worthy frocks and accessories- that include a fabulous Rob Ben Israel decorated Cake, bedazzled Godiva Chocolates, a glorious Clara Kassavina Clutch and Moet Chandon Magnum Crystal Coverings by Moreno BHLV Custompieces of Beverly Hills… land somewhere worthy.

As noted in the accompanying magazine…this amazing Swarovski exhibit represents-
“…the marriage of tradition and avant-garde, all seen through the shimmering prism of crystal elements.”

3. Maquillage

2008 is the year when Maquillage started to grow on me. The fall collection includes shades of purple, plum, gold, and gentle neutrals, which happen to be the shades I have been wearing the most lately. Later on I will be trying out Forming Shiny Eyes in 52 (seen above), with an alluring combination of purple and gold (with a pale pink cream base). The collection also features twelve new shades of Lasting Climax Rouge, which debuted in spring and has been selling well in Asia.

2. Lavshuca

When you don't want to spend too much on makeup but still want quality and all the prettiness, you can almost always count on Lavshuca. A couple of items have been on my shopping list for a while (Dual Prism Eyes in PU-1 and Rouge Star Classics in (probably) PK-1). There are no limited-edition items in this collection so I will think about getting them after deciding which holiday 2008 items to have.

1. Coffret D'Or

For me, at this point, I think I can say that 2008 is the year of Coffret D'Or in terms of Japanese makeup. Launched just before the beginning of 2008 with a lot of expectation, Coffret D'Or has done well this year, both as T'Estimo's successor, which continues to help shape the overall image of Kanebo, and for me as a makeup fan.

Coffret D'Or's solid fall 2008 collection does what the line is supposed to do, which is to create beautifully wearable shades with dependable quality for a wide range of consumers, from those wearing makeup on a regular basis to those new to makeup. With a price point lower than those of brands like Lunasol, it does have its own advantage.

Coffret D'Or is still expanding, and I think in 2009 we will see more new products. (The point makeup range hasn't included basic items such as pencil eyeliners, and there will probably be more base makeup products. I am expecting to see an under-eye concealer pen that Revue used to have.) I certainly hope it will be worth the wait.

Can FASHION Imitate ART?

…It can if its in a Spring 2009 collection!

We’ve all heard the cliche defense of the fashion-obsessed saying, “Fashion is a form of art!” The usual response is always soaked thoroughly with sarcasm and followed with a turn of the back. But upon reviewing the latest in trends from top designers, and some from those who have yet to burst out on the runway scene, it seems that today designers may be drawing their inspiration from, well…art!

Take a look at the footage from Martin Margiela’s Spring 2009 collection. The faceless models are reminiscent of Salvador Dali’s Mirage painting, in which the human figures are also, faceless. The extreme and exaggerated silhouettes of the jackets are comparable to the angles found in Dali’s Premonition of Civil War. The Surrealist movement in art no doubt played a role in the development of Margiela’s collection. It was that same avant-garde attitude and intriguing yet aesthetic awkwardess that catapulted artists like Salvador Dali and Max Ernst to the walls of MoMA in New York, and is now walking the runways of the world.

Need more? Okay… Remember the Spring 09 of Gaspard Yurkievich in Paris? The use of color in his line was most memorable to me. It was a perfect blend of greys and whites with splashes of color. The same color scheme is reflected in Charles Demuth’s My Egypt. Even the way the lights and camera flashes hit the prism-like shapes of the shoes was reminiscent in the cubist-influenced Demuth.

Designers need not look farther for ideas to inspire and enlighten them than a Modern Art Museum, or at the very least, a library/internet. Do you want an art-inspired look without having to wait for the sample sale? New and upcoming designer Jon Wye can hook you up with his Andy Warhol (pioneered the pop-art movement and cultivated fashion icons like Edie Sedgwick) tribute, in the form of a silkscreen tee shirt ($36, jonwye.com). Now breathe in that fresh new trend smell….and relax!

Issey Miyake SS 09

An Issey Miyake show without a quirky subtext is, well, hardly an Issey Miyake show. Designer Dai Fujiwara was inspired this season by a “color-hunting” trip he made to the Amazon and a subsequent meeting with famed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, who drew a line that Fujiwara turned into a dress — a draped-around-the-body style in pale green. Fujiwara was clearly looking for different ways to treat the organic and architectural themes so dear to the house. The results were both soft and futuristic, from diaphanous sheath dresses in blue and purple to a billowing pleated jacket. Much of the inventiveness was in the fabrics. Some were woven with eight color threads, while others were based on light filtered through a prism. Vivienne Westwood Set to Release an Album

Last year whilst I was scanning the racks of my local CD store, slowly oozing down the aisles so I could carefully inspect every band, I stumbled upon Karl. Yes, Karl Lagerfeld, who was wedged somewhere between Lohan and The Kinks. At the time I was surprised, even shocked, to see a designer’s name on an album because the man may be a connoisseur of fashion, but music? Karl’s taste in music, though I am slightly reluctant to admit this, is awesome. He had chosen bands like The Pipettes, LCD Sound system and Siouxsie & The Banshees, which caused me to contemplate buying his CD until I realized the guy was charging over $40 for “some of his favorite songs.” Thanks, but no thanks.

This year Vivienne Westwood has jumped on the proverbial bandwagon and has released a CD that she has conceptualized, curated, and art-directed and, similar to Lagerfeld, is a compilation of some of her favorite songs like “Last Night Was Made for Love,” by Billy Fury, and Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers. Westwood told British Vogue:

“My clothes always tell a story. It may refer to the past, but it’s always projected into this heroic future. And I choose the music accordingly … Sometimes the music can just be sexy, it can let you relax, look at the clothes, put people into a fantastic mood. Then it might just have to swing back and lift you up to the final triumph of the fashion show.”

I wonder who will be next?

The dimensions of the octagon are 17mm, the round are 16mm, and the oval 19x15mm.

Fall 2008 Makeup Trend Report

If there is one word that sums up the makeup trends for fall 2008, it is "warmth". We had grey from fall 2007 and cool lilac and blue from spring 2008, and now we are greeted by opulent gold and red.

Fields of Gold

Chanel leads the pack with a collection with gold in the eye palette, lip gloss, face highlighter, and nail color. It is a decadent shade of gold, although it can be too warm for some complexions. If this is the case with you, items from Lavshuca (Grade Color Select in GD-1) and Shiseido The Makeup (Lip Gloss in G29 Mellow Gold) might suit you better.

Shades of Red

If you are fans of purples, there are still some nice shades from Givenchy, Clarins, Awake and Sonia Rykiel as these beautiful hues continue the trend in spring 2008. But many purples are taking on a much warmer tone for fall 2008 and turning into plum purples. We are also seeing shades of burgundy and red, which, just like gold, are the key shades for this fall.

For plum and burgundy, which still somewhat echo the spring trend, look into the palettes from Laura Mercier, EST, and Magie Deco:
