Politics' 1st ladies of fashion create a frenzy with must-have looks

Sarah’s specs. Michelle’s dresses. Cindy’s diamonds. Jill’s handbag.We love them. We want them. We have to have them. Or at the very least, we want to know all about them — just as we did with Jackie Kennedy’s pillbox hats and Barbara Bush’s pearls.The economy may be the main event in the presidential race. But for people who love fashion, campaign-trail style is a compelling sideshow.Headliners are Sarah Palin and Michelle Obama, both 44. Cindy McCain, 54, and Jill Biden, 57, are the bit players. But the moment any of them shows up in a new outfit, the fashion media starts digging for details, the bloggers start commenting and the public relations corps fires off news releases claiming bragging rights for designers.

Dresses and pearls

First it was Obama’s dresses, starting with the magenta sheath she wore the evening she famously fist-bumped her husband, Barack Obama, as he claimed the Democratic nomination in June. Overnight, the name on every fashionista’s lips was Maria Pinto, the Chicago designer who made the sleeveless, V-neck dress.

And the necklace she wore with the dress prompted a rapid-response news release trumpeting, “Michelle Obama has been accessorizing her much-appraised style with Carolee pearls.”

So many women followed her lead that Carolee has seen a double-digit percentage increase in sales of the $50 necklace, company spokeswoman Ashley Futterknecht said.

Specs and retro hair

The day after the Democrats’ convention ended, Sarah Palin burst onto the scene — and immediately sparked a gotta-have-it frenzy among fans. They want her rimless eyeglasses, her red shoes, even her beehive hairdo.

“Her eyeglasses, and the way she is wearing them with such confidence, has had an impact, big-time,” said James J. Spina, editor-in-chief at 20/20, a leading eyewear-industry magazine.

Women across the country are clamoring for her $375 frames by Japanese designer Kazuo Kawasaki for Italee Optics, he said, and for less-expensive versions. “Italee no longer can keep that frame in stock,” Spina said.

And surely it is more than coincidence that the Republican vice presidential nominee’s updo with side-swept bangs was a red-carpet hit at the Emmys on Sept. 21.

Even women with short hair can get the look.

No sooner was Palin named to the Republican ticket than WigSalon.com posted pictures of “Sarah Palin style wigs” on its Web site. With Halloween on the horizon, WigSalon.com is offering one bargain-priced at $46.

2 kinds of classic

Not to be left out of the fashion picture are Cindy McCain and Jill Biden.

McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, is known for elegant, tailored, designer suits and Chanel shoes, strong and shiny colors, patriotic brooches and stiffly lacquered hairstyles.

Her glamorous, ’80s look often is likened to that of Krystle Carrington (Linda Evans) on “Dynasty.”

Jill Biden, whose husband is Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, has a chic, understated style, with classic but updated suits, separates and Chetta B dresses, pashmina scarves and a loose, layered hairstyle. She often casually drapes a sweater around her shoulders, and relaxes in Seven jeans and Michael Stars T-shirts.

Noah McCullough 13-Year-Old Presidential Prodigy (Photos)

Noah McCullough, 13, has authored two books: The Essential Book of Presidential Trivia published by Random House and First Kids: The True Stories of all the President’s Children, published by Scholastic.

The teenager has been traveling across the country since he was 9, speaking at schools, churches, motivational seminars about his passion for all things presidential. He has been a hit on the talk show circuit with appearances on Jay Leno, Martha Stewart, Oprah and Conan O’Brien to name just a few.

McCullough developed his keen interest in presidential history during a mock election in kindergarten. With the assistance of willing parents, his early ambition was supported and fostered. McCullough’s website looks like a candidate running for office - because that is Noah’s plan. He will run on the Republican ticket in 2032 and he’s already actively campaigning.

According to Donna McCullough, his mother and former school teacher, “He’s very patriotic and very Republican.” The self described Democrat says her son had 3,000 presidential history books in his personal collection by age 9. After visiting Bush’s presidential library at Texas A&M University 27 times, Noah finally got to meet and be photographed with Bush.

Sarah Palin’s face is on the cover of Newsweek…..well, actually it is part of the Alaska Governor’s facial profile. The issue is dated October 13, 2008 and hit newsstands on Monday.

The story, written by Jon Meacham, is entitled She’s One of The Folks (And that’s the problem). A fair amount of criticism has been leveled against Newsweek for putting Palin on the cover in a photo that shows all of her pores, wrinkles, age lines and blemishes. Most covers are a product of Photoshop magic to the nth degree.

We actually think that Palin is not hampered by Newsweek’s alleged slight. She’s an extremely attractive woman who shines in any light. Most would give her that - even if they strongly disagree with her politics.

Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain squared off in their second debate on October 7, 2008 in Nashville Tennessee. The Townhall event took place at Belmont University and was hosted by Tom Brokaw.

Jill Bidens Mother Bonny Jean Jacobs Died

Jill Biden’s mother, Bonny Jean Jacobs, died today after a long illness. She was 78 years old and lived in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. She raised five daughters, was a homemaker and avid gardener with a life long love of reading.

Donald C. Jacobs, a banker, died in 1999. Both of Jill’s parents were born in Hammonton, New Jersey and raised their daughters in the same city. Jill was the oldest of their children. Three of her sisters live in Pennsylvania and one lives in New Jersey.

Bonny Jean Jacobs had been living in a hospice facility because of her failing health. Her condition took a turn for the worse on Saturday and the family rallied around her bedside in Bonny Jean’s final hours. Her death came on October 5, 2008. On Friday, her son-in-law Joe Biden saw his son Beau Biden off to Iraq with his National Guard unit.

The Barack Obama campaign canceled Delaware Senator Biden’s schedule Monday and Tuesday because of the passing of his mother-in-law. Biden spokesman David Wade said in a statement: “We appreciate everyone’s respect for the family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

WILMINGTON, Delaware (CNN) – Joe Biden's spokesman said the Delaware senator would be canceling campaign events Monday and Tuesday in the wake of his mother-in-law's death Sunday.

"Other details will follow, but we appreciate everyone's respect for the family's privacy during this difficult time," wrote Biden spokesman David Wade.

Bonny Jacobs, Jill Biden's mother, had been sick for a long time and was living in a hospice.

Wade announced Saturday that Sunday and Monday's events were canceled after doctors told the family to stay close by. He said the family is now together at home in Wilmington.

The death comes the same day Biden's son Beau deploys with his National Guard unit to a mobilization station in Texas before a tour in Iraq.

Tina Fey, as Governor Sarah Palin and Queen Latifah, as Gwen Ifill, were at the top of their game in the Saturday Night Live opening skit on October 4th. They clearly nailed it.

Fey returned for a third round as John McCain’s vice presidential pick. Playing the role of Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden was Jason Sudeikis.
