WSJ shows off its new glossy

Guess who wants to flaunt their new lifestyle mag in our faces? The Wall Street Journal! But don't lose your minds just yet, darlings.

According to WWD, the glossy publication really itsn't much to write home about. In fact, most of the "exclusive" stories featured inside of the issue have already been, well, reported:

"While the paper's new magazine WSJ has an interview with Republican vice presidential nominee Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin, the story is about her workout regime and doesn't mention her as a candidate. Then there's a story on Kate Moss and Sir Philip Green - but Moss gave the real scoop about her growing business empire to last month's Vogue. And a story on the America's Cup battle between Oracle's Larry Ellison and Ernesto Bertarelli was extensively covered in Sunday's New York Times."

Meanwhile, the cover of the WSJ magazine is fairly interesting -- it features IMG's Diana Dondoe wrapped in a dress made of out of Wall Street Journal newspapers. In this clip, watch as someone tries to be excited about the new mag.

Singing in the Rain

I have arrived back home after two weeks in sunny Tenerife to rain, rain and more rain. No change really fromn when I left to go on holiday but feels even more miserable in contrast to the gorgeous hot weather I have enjoyed for the last two weeks.

Of course my thoughts are now firmly focused on the practicalities of the getting out and about in torrential rain and of course managing to look stylish with it. There are three essentials that come to mind when planning for such severe weather conditions. They are the rain coat, a good pair of boots and a neat umbrella to fit in my handbag and take with me everywhere. Here is my wet weather wish list.

If you want a neutral rain coat that will go with just about anything and is bound to be in fashion year after year, you should opt for a classic style trench coat.

On a California summer afternoon, the industrial landscape of Sun Valley a stretch of gravel pits and salvage yards next to the Golden State Freeway seems to quiver against a backdrop of cloudless sky and the Verdugo Mountains on the smudged horizon. Here, deep within the Apex Electronics store, Laura and Kate Mulleavy are carefully excavating a hoard of insulated wires. The Teflon-coated ones have the most intense colors, Kate says as she uncoils several inches of blazing vermilion wire, a remnant from a local aerospace firm. Kate, 29, and Laura, 28, are sisters, artistic collaborators and partners in Rodarte, the three-year-old fashion label based in Los Angeles.

Rodarte (pronounced ro-DAR-tay) is a small, extraordinary gem of an enterprise. In 2005, to introduce themselves to the fashion world, the Mulleavy sisters sent out 30 handmade paper dolls, each with a paper armoire containing seven paper dresses. I was inspired by Zelda Fitzgeralds paper dolls, explains Kate, who, like Fitzgerald, drew extensively accessorized wardrobes. The collection itself consisted of 10 meticulously hand-finished garments, including a pumpkin-colored silk cocktail dress with a lovely slouching silhouette and a black wool coat, cut in military style and ingeniously detailed with pheasant feathers and organza inserts. Pieces like these are as skillfully constructed as haute couture (a single gown can require 100 hours of work) but much of it is presented as ready to wear. That first season, their clothes were modestly priced from $2,000 to $3,000. Less than a year later, a whispery yellow silk chiffon evening dress a pale undulating cascade of tiny pleats and voluptuous, handcrafted rosettes, from the fall/winter collection was reported to have sold for nearly $20,000. It is now in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museums Costume Institute.

The phenomenon of fashion-designing sisters is not new, but its extremely rare. During the early 20th century in Paris, the Callot Soeurs were known for their elaborate, diaphanous gowns weightless dreams of dresses with gauzy layers shot through with metallic threads and faceted crystals that played with the light. Now, in the early 21st century in Los Angeles, it is the Mulleavy sisters who are spinning light, movement and color into astonishing clothes. In a recent fashion spread, the model Coco Rocha is photographed wearing Rodarte; she appears as a jubilant pink fairy, her dress a tattered rainbow shadowed with soft tufts of mohair fog.

The Mulleavy sisters with their pale complexions and dark gleaming hair are striking, unselfconscious beauties. These are faces reminiscent of Courbets Jo, La Belle Irlandaise or those genteel friends photographed by Lady Clementina Hawarden in the mid-19th century. Rodarte is their mothers maiden name. Their maternal grandfather, an inventor and self-taught aeronautical engineer, left Zacatecas after the Mexican Revolution and traveled to Los Angeles by stagecoach. (In Pasadena, where Kate and Laura still live with their parents, one of their favorite restaurants is housed in a 1909 craftsman bungalow the very place their grandfather once worked as a roving musician.) Although an anachronistic aura does seem to hover around the Mulleavy sisters, theres actually very little about them thats old-fashioned; even their good manners arent quaint. They eschew frocks, including those they make, and dress practically like studio artists in gray T-shirts (Hanes three-pack from Target) and New Balance sneakers. We are not Chanel, Kate says. We dont have millionaire boyfriends and yachts.

The start-up money for this altogether sui generis business venture came from the sisters themselves: Kate sold her record collection, 15 cartons crammed with a dizzying amount of carefully selected music ranging from a deluxe, illustrated version of Walt Disneys Snow White to a mint vinyl first pressing of an early Black Sabbath album; and Laura worked as a waitress until a little over a year ago.

The Rodarte way of thinking is wonderfully unconstricted by eras or trends. The Mulleavy sisters are gifted and indefatigable cultural hunter-gatherers; their exquisite clothing, fearlessly imagined and precisely constructed, attests to their voracious curiosity and constant discernment. They might be thinking about Rolling Thunders Memorial Day Weekend Motorcycle Rally, when 400,000 U.S. military veterans and their friends roar onto the National Mall; or they might be looking at the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, Frances Lee Glessners miniature forensic crime scenes from the 1940s. Or, you could come across them pondering the fate of the soon-to-be-discontinued eosin pink, a color derived from fluorescent red dye named for Eos, the goddess of dawn and commonly used in laboratory procedures. The wires theyre holding now are going to be used as part of the shoes for their new collection. But first, we needed to figure out whether they could be sewn or soldered, Laura explains. She strips back the extruded wires polymer coating and reveals its lustrous silver core. Amazing, she says.

The Rodarte spring 09 collection will be presented Tuesday at the Gagosian Gallery on 21st Street in Chelsea. Wed been thinking about an idea of the future and what gets left behind, Laura says, citing a free-range list of inspirations: earth art of the 1960s and 70s and Robert Smithsons displaced mirrors reflecting and fracturing the natural world; Nancy Holts Sun Tunnels, four industrial concrete tubes punctured with holes in the patterns of constellations, in a remote Utah field; and the 2001 cult film Donnie Darko.

Sarah Palin Lies Exposed and Truth Revealed

Sarah Palin, and her family, have been subjected to unprecedented scrutiny, and has been smeared by many in the liberal media. Here are eight lies that have been responded to with the truth:

1) Palin “Joined a Secessionist Political Party”

The Charge: Unsubstantiated Internet reports insisted Palin was once a member of the Alaska Independence Party, which critics call a secessionist political movement and supporters say is dedicated to seeking greater state control over federal lands across Alaska.

The Facts: Palin has been a registered Republican since 1982. There is no record of her ever being a member of the AIP, or any party but the GOP. Palin’s husband has been a member of the AIP in the past, but since 2002 has been a registered independent.

2) Palin Supported a “Nazi Sympathizer”

The Charge: “Palin was a supporter of Pat Buchanan, a right-winger or, as many Jews call him: a Nazi sympathizer,” Obama Florida spokesman Mark Bubriski was quoted as saying in a Miami Herald article.

The Facts: While mayor of Wasilla, Palin wore a Buchanan button during the sometimes presidential candidate’s 1999 visit. But Palin actually supported Steve Forbes in 2000, and served as a co-chair on his Alaska campaign.

In the weeks after the 1999 report of her wearing the Buchanan button, Palin said: “When presidential candidates visit our community, I am always happy to meet them. I’ll even put on their button when handed one as a polite gesture of respect. … The article may have left your readers with the perception that I am endorsing this candidate, as opposed to welcoming his visit to Wasilla.”

3) Palin “Wants Creationism Taught in School”

The Charge: Palin opposes the teaching of evolution, and would mandate the teaching of creationism in the state’s public schools.

The Facts: Palin said during her 2006 gubernatorial campaign that she would not push the state Board of Education to add creation-based alternatives to the state’s required curriculum, or look for creationism advocates when she appointed board members. She has kept this pledge, according to the Associated Press.

Palin has spoken in favor of classroom discussions of creationism, in some cases. “I don’t think there should be a prohibition against debate if it comes up in class. It doesn’t have to be part of the curriculum,” Palin told the Anchorage Daily News in a 2006 interview.

4) Palin “Was Nearly Recalled” While Mayor

The Charge: Palin was so controversial as mayor of Wasilla that she was almost recalled by a popular voter movement.

The Facts: The Wasilla City Council considered but never took up a recall motion after she fired a longtime police chief, who subsequently brought a lawsuit. A citizen’s group dropped their recall bid, and a judge ruled Palin had the authority to fire the chief.

5) Palin “Opposes Sex Education”

The Charge: Palin opponents say she supported the end of all sex education in public schools. In light of her daughter’s presumably unplanned teen pregnancy, this has been a particularly well discussed Internet topic.

The Facts: “The explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support,” Palin wrote in a 2006 questionnaire distributed among gubernatorial candidates. Palin favors abstinence-based sex education programs.

6) “This Picture Proves Palin is …”

The Charge: A slew of fake, Photoshopped or misdated photographs on the Internet purport to show Palin in any number of embarrassing or compromising poses. One photo claimed to show Palin standing poolside, wearing an American flag-themed bikini, toting a rifle with telescopic sight.

The Facts: The various photos are being discredited and shown to be fake on a number of Web sites. The original of the so-called bikini shot, probably the best-known of the pictures, was shown to have been taken of another woman, with Palin’s head Photoshopped above the body.

7) Palin is the grandmother, and not the mother, of Trig Palin

The Charge: The most salacious rumor of all, this theory holds that Palin did not give birth to her son Trig in April, and was actually covering up for her daughter, Bristol.

The Facts: There are a number of photographs showing an apparently pregnant Sarah Palin, as well as a number of published eyewitness accounts of her pregnancy. These include First Lady Laura Bush, who says she spoke with a pregnant Palin at a governor’s conference in February. An assignment manager for KTVA news in Anchorage, Cherie Shirey, has also been quoted saying: “We worked with Governor Palin many times in 2008. Our reporters worked her on location and in the studio and I worked with her myself. She was definitely pregnant. You could see it in her belly and her face. The whole idea that Sarah Palin wasn’t pregnant with Trig is completely, absolutely absurd.”

The McCain campaign, in an apparent effort to counteract the rumors, announced last weekend that Bristol Palin is five months pregnant, which indicated she would have become pregnant before Trig was born, and is still pregnant, meaning she isn’t the mother of Trig.

8 ) Palin cheated on her husband Todd

The Charge: Rumors have bee spread alleging Sarah had an affair with her husband’s divorced business partner.

The Facts: Todd’s partner, Scott Richter, filed to have his divorce file sealed, causing the National Enquirer to allege he was trying to hide an affair with Sarah. The judge denied the request to seal the records, so the Smoking Gun went through the records, and found Palin’s name only mentioned in the motion to seal the records. Richter said in his motion he wanted the records sealed, because reporters were using phone numbers, and other information in those records, to violate his privacy, so he felt sealing the records would stop future reporters from contacting him, and others listed in the records. There is absolutely no evidence that Richter and Sarah had an affair. John McCain threatened to sue the National Enquirer over the story, and now with the new evidence, it appears the National Enquirer will need a good lawyer if McCain moves ahead with the lawsuit.

Public Allies is a Barack Obama Racist Socialist Army

Public Allies is a Chicago organization of tax payer funded protesters. Barack Obama founded Public Allies in Chicago in 1992, and Michelle Obama became the executive director. The group uses tax payer dollars to pay people who sign up. The Public Allies paid members spend most of their time protesting. Public Allies teaches the young adults that work for them that America is a racist, oppressive place in need of "social change." Public Allies said in a tax filing:

"Our alumni are more than twice as likely as 18-34 year olds to engage in protest activities."

A graduate of the 2005 Los Angeles Public Allies class, Nelly Nieblas, says it’s just a lot of talk about race. It’s a lot of talk about sexism, a lot of talk about homophobia, a lot of talk about isms and phobias. One of those isms is heterosexism, heterosexism, which a Public Allies training seminar in Chicago remember, founding member, Barack Obama. Executive director, Michelle Obama, in Chicago. That’s their chapter. A Public Allies training seminar in Chicago describes heterosexism as a negative byproduct of capital quoting of capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy and male dominated privilege, end quote. By the way, your tax dollars now fund about half of Public Allies’ expenses, through Bill Clinton’s AmeriCorps. Obama wants to fully fund it and expand it to a national program some say will cost $500 billion.

After 19 months of Obama running for President, you’d think the mainstream media could have dug this information up, and they probably did, but didn’t share it with anyone else. With Sarah Palin, they dumped an avalanche of rumors, lies, and scandal over her head in only 5 days, and she’s still standing with her head held high. Sarah isn’t making the same excuses that Obama did when he got a few questions he didn’t like. Sarah has answered every question with honesty, and hasn’t tried to hide anything. Obama could learn something from her.

When Obama, Biden, McCain, and Palin square off for the Presidential debates, I’m hoping someone has the guts to ask Obama about his Public Allies organization.
