When any new PDA/cell phones hits the market, there is usually a lag time before the compatible accessories are available. This is not true with the Treo 700w. If you own the Treo 650, you can use all your Treo accessories with the Treo 700w.

There’s one major change or upgrade to 700W from the Treo 650. Now you’ll notice two soft buttons right below the LCD screen of the Treo 700w. These launch the Windows mobile 5.0 application.

The green telephone icon button on the far left will let you make a cell phone call. The red telephone icon, on the far right, lets you enter your cell phone call. The Windows button to the right of the green telephone icon launches the Windows mobile start menu.
The OK button to the left of the red telephone icon button is used to close a current open application, so be sure you’re ready to quit the task at hand before you press the button.

What’s nice about the new Treo 700w QWERTY keyboard is that the keys are squarer and better spaced apart than its predecessor. At night, if I need to e-mail someone, the illuminated keys make it easy for me to see what I’m typing on the screen.

New Treo 700 Screen with New Features

What I like about the new screen is the quick dial window at the top of the LCD screen. With this feature it’s easy to type in the name or telephone number to dial.
Also, near the bottom of the 700w screen is a web search window. Simply type in the keyword phrase in right away, the 700w will launch a Web browser and give you the results of your keyword search. The other handy feature is that you can now program VCR-like keys. These hotkeys can be programmed so you can easily delete, or skip to the next message just by pressing these hot keys. You can easily hit: play, next message, back, pause and delete.

Lower Screen Resolution and Long Battery Life

The old Treo 650 came with a higher screen resolution at 320 x 320 pixels. With the new Treo 700w the resolution is lower at 240 x 240 pixels. It is still easy to read at night and in the bright outdoors. I checked e-mails, looked at my schedule for the day and called someone with one hand. Because of the centrally located 5-way navigation pad, the Treo 700w is comfortable for both left handed and right handed people. The 700w comes with an expanded SDIO expansion card slot, which allows the addition of up to 2 GB of storage space.

I used the Treo 700w for full three days before I needed to replace the battery. This is definitely an improvement over the older 650 model. Also, the flash ROM built-in the Windows buffs up things, which drastically reduces battery consumption, a good thing. If you’ve just spent 45 minutes typing in a proposal and your battery runs out, don’t pull your hair out, the data will be stored on your flash ROM.

Verizon ED-VO Fast Internet Option

Verizon claims that their high-speed ED-VO can transfer data at 400 to 700 kilobytes per second. Comparing both the Treo 650 in the new 700w, I loaded a web page five times faster on the 700w using Verizon’s ED-VO network than on the Treo 650. Browsing on the 700w is comparable to my broadband cable Internet connection at home.

Alert Friends and Family with One Push E-Mail

Move over Blackberry. The Palm Treo 700w uses a polling process to send an SMS from your server to the Treo 700w. This tells the Treo 700w to get ready and receive a message.
What is polling? You can program your 700w to pull e-mail to your device on a regular basis. For instance, every morning at 8 a.m., you can program your e-mails to be downloaded from your server to the Treo 700w device.

True one push e-mail is when you receive an e-mail, and that e-mail immediately is sent to your Treo 700w device, that’s called push e-mail. Unfortunately, push e-mail won’t be available until the next upgrade. When will that be? None of us know unless you have a psychic friend that has an 85% accuracy level. You can ask your psychic friend to tune into the cosmos and ask when Palm will roll out the true push e-mail to market.

It’s never been easy to stay in touch inexpensively with friends and family. Now you can by e-mailing them a positive message from your Treo 700w.

What is Wireless sync from Verizon Wireless? This is an extra service that you need to subscribe to from Verizon wireless. It is not available on the market today. But down the road, you will be able to redirect your e-mail from your home computer or office server directly to your 700w smart phone in real-time.

Windows Mobile 5.0 Operating System

Last spring, Bill Gates announced the launch of Windows mobile 5.0 operating system. Now you can view: pod casts, photo blogs, download news RSS feeds, and stream live TV shows and music from your TV tuner enabled desktop PC at home to your Treo 700w. I did not find the 5.0 operating system to be buggy at all.

One Very Amazing Converged PDA/Phone

In the past, converged devices offered low-quality cell phone reception and call quality. Essentially, if you owned an older converged device, it amounted to a very expensive PDA and a bad cell phone. Many folks would have to carry around a regular cell phone just so they could make and receive cell phone calls.

The Treo 700w radio stack and Windows mobile 5.0 is completely revamped. Now there are less dropped calls. Plus, it offers higher call quality. With Verizon Wireless, my provider, I found the call clarity to be greatly improved compared to the Treo 650. I purposely made a three-way conference call to two associates of mine: one located in Sedona, Arizona and the other in Long Island, New York. During the entire conference call, I heard everyone just fine. The call did not end abruptly due to poor reception. Overall, the Treo 700w smart phone exceeded my expectations.
Thanks you Palm, the Verizon network and Windows mobile 5.0. Now I have mobile paradise. I hope you will too.

Leg warmers paired with stiletto heels? What am I saying - leg warmers period?

Slouch boots? Teased hair? Oh, and let’s not forget the iridescent blue eye shadow and frosted lipstick. Yes, they’ve all risen from their all-too-shallow graves and are packing a punch in 21st century trends. Don’t as me why, because I don’t know. All I can do is shake my head and protest that it’s hip to be square.

Let’s briefly review and you can decide whether or not you’d like to join the new retro crowd. I propose we get the absolute disasters out of the way first.

It seems that ruffled mini skirts have found their way back into fashion, except they’ve shrunk. I remember wearing those when I was ten. Call me nostalgic about some things, but certainly not that garish number. And then there’s that issue of the leg-warmer. In my view, these knitting mishaps are acceptable only if you’re figure-skating, and even then, they’re questionable. If your legs are cold, put on a pair of bloody pants!

I can only pray that acid-washed jeans (and colored jeans in general) never see the light of day again. I’m still trying to forget that nasty episode of bubblgum jeans.

Black and white pairings are big again, but let’s just hope we’re spared the agony of neon, spandex and ultra-tacky brooches!

Now, even I must admit that certain localized 80s elements may be safely extracted from the otherwise tacky decade and inserted tastefully into contemporary fashion. For example, the wide belt is a smart addition to new millennium fashion. It’s all about balance, though: a flashy, funky belt is clever only when accessorizing a relatively simple skirt, pant or dress. A snazzy belt is a great way to dress up a pair of sexy jeans and shows that you really know how to accessorize. Pull it together with a coordinating shoe or boot to complete the look.

I can’t say enough about the bold new colors, patterns and heels that are emerging this season. Designers are really having a lot of fun with accessories, so take the plunge and invest in at least one quality bag, boot and belt trio that will carry you through countless outfits.

Another brief moment of 80s greatness can be found in the fishnet stocking, which is officially leading the way in the hosiery revival. This naughty accessory is actually a double retro, as fishnets were also all the rage in the 1960s, and have long been associated with cabaret dancers, ladies of the night, and punk rockers.

In their newest incarnation, fishnets have been pronounced chic by designers and have been making splashes all over runways this season. Designers are playing with scale and playing with a range of mesh sizes. The nets are widely available in classic black as well as many updated options including cocoa, white, nude, and even red!

Update work attire with more conservative neutral colors. Some fashionistas are even layering fishnets over brightly colored hosiery; not my thing, but give it a try if it interests you. A general rule: if you snag ‘em, bag ‘em. Holes and runs in hosiery (especially fishnets) are never cool. Never.

Off-the-shoulder shirts and sweaters will always be hot. A pair of comfy jeans paired with a knit sweater that reveals a peek of bare shoulder emits the message that you’re sexy, especially when you’re not trying.

Bohemian-style floral print shirts and skirts are another casually sexy look that are making a comeback - separately, of course. This look is also a double deja vu, hailing previously from the 1960s and 70s. The object here is not to look psychedelic, though, so don’t’ overdo it: Pair a flowing feminine peasant blouse with a solid pair of slacks or skirt. Likewise, a floral skirt should go with a solid top.

The denim jacket is a trendy casual fall item that looks great with a chunky scarf and an otherwise non-denim outfit, such as a tweed skirt with flat-heeled suede leather boots. Yes, it’s from the 80s, but the jean jacket is a great way to dress something down.

The upside to this fashion exercise in regurgitation is that the eighties were recent enough that local thrift stores are stacked to the gills with eighties-wear. If you insist on returning to the crazy 80s, dig out your old Madonna tapes and have fun. I on the other hand will extract what I like and wait it out.

The Italian show, Viva Italia, was a huge success, easy to source designer outfits - we had some fabulous clothes and everyone fell over themselves to show on the catwalk. There was a huge enthusiasm amongst retailers, designers and models. Everything was enthusiastically received by the viewing public and for the next show, I have people lining up to take part. Everyone in the fashion industry are proud to be Italian - I can’t wait until the next show.

The Spanish show, Viva Espana, was still a great success, but it was so difficult to source designs that were Spanish. I contacted the PR teams who mostly came back with a resounding ‘No’. Why? They want to be seen as International Designers. Refusals from Adolfo Dominguez, Mango and Zara were a huge surprise to me, as their clothes are very popular and would have been wonderful. Thank goodness for the wonderful PR team for Armand Basi - they were warm, friendly and incredibly helpful. Why are the Spanish not proud of their designs? Any ideas?

For an easier packing experience, remember:

1. Lists, lists, lists: All destinations require different things to be packed. Once the destination is fixed, make a list of things you and the family will require. You might want to make separate list for each family member to avoid missing anything essential.

Lists speed up packing and help you fill up baggage claims in the event of lost baggage! However, beware of too many lists. They could confuse you and make life difficult. Also, keep the final list in your hand baggage or wallet where you can refer to it in case you need it.

2. Baggage type: Seems like a silly discussion but could make a considerable impact on your holiday! Consider packing fragile crystal in soft-sided luggage, not a great idea, is it? If the trip is going to be a long and rugged one, perhaps a hard-sided luggage will be a better companion. Choose according to requirements not only on fashion dictates! When buying bags for a trip, look for in-built features like:

a. hanger rods

b. Reverse-fold designs

c. Packing fixtures

d. extra pockets

e. Wetpacks

f. Retractable wheels

g. locks that do not dangle too much

f. Size that allows the baggage to be carried for its intended use. For instance, if it is a handbag then it should fit the flight overhead baggage area.

3. The business of packing: the quickest steps to packing are:

a. Clear a flat surface for packing and open your packing cases on it, one at a time.

b. Stack all the material to be packed next to the bag. Make separate stacks for separate bags.

c. Place heavy objects like shoes, toiletries, and hairdryers at the bottom of the case. You can call up the hotel you are staying at to confirm if they provide things like hairdryers and avoid carrying too much.

d. Next, use wrinkle free clothing like jeans and lingerie to cushion heavy items.

e. Now, start with the heavy clothing-suits and dresses. Keep the shoulders of the suits straight, next to the hinge of the bag. Fold clothes over each other to avoid creasing and wrinkling.

Fold all clothes on their natural creases to minimize the space they take. (Note: check with the hotel if they provide laundry service, if they do you can reduce the number of things you have to carry.)

4. Packing the hand baggage: It is imperative that you are equally or more cautious about what you carry on your person.

A checklist is given below:

a. your PASSPORT and TICKETS.

b. Wallet and identification like driver’s license or other identification.

c. Insurance papers.

d. Traveler’s checks, cash, and any other valuables.

e. Itinerary with confirmation numbers and required phone numbers.

f. Your medication.

g. Film rolls that you can request to be hand checked to avoid damaging them with x-rays! Its best practice to get the rolls developed wherever you are before traveling, even though it might be more expensive to do so but at least you are assured that they are not getting spoilt!

Lastly, travel light. Coordinate outfits to avoid carrying too many clothes. Don’t be too flashy so that you don’t draw too much attention to yourself and your baggage. Mark your luggage well to avoid it being mixed up and to recognize it quickly on luggage conveyors.

If your hat is made of wool as most fitted hats, hats for baseball, and other sports hat, you’ll have no problem. Top sports fashion sites recommend shrinking your hat by using the hot water method. Wool shrinks when washed with hot water, but don’t wash your hat just yet because it might cause the color to run. Instead, wet it with hot or warm water (no detergent please) and wear it. If color starts to run, rinse with cold water quickly and dry with a hand dryer, otherwise, allow the hat to dry while wearing it. Air the dry hat out to get rid of the damp smell but remember to avoid sunlight as the sun can bleach your hat. If you don’t want to risk the color of your fitted hats, hat shrinking can be done using another method. Cutting out the mesh in the inside of your hat and taking out the board will shrink your hat significantly. However, this method is far riskier because your hat will have the tendency to change shape or be deformed. It will not only look old but can look severely battered.

The best and most effective way to get really good fitting hats is to buy a good brand with a really good fit. Break fitted hats in by wearing them often. Aside from having a good fit, your fitted hats, hats for games, and other hats will get an authentic old look and feel without deformity caused by hastening the ageing and fitting process.

Unless you are going somewhere very remote, don’t bother bringing a water filtration system. Most people in the world have access to fresh water; they simply can’t afford to buy it.

Bring clothing appropriate to where you are going. If you are traveling to the tropics, bring light clothing that dries quickly. Avoid heavy apparel like blue jeans and boots.

Don’t forget the little things like nail clippers, a sewing kit, compass, band-aids and toothbrush. In some countries, these things can be puzzlingly rare.

Do not bother bringing a space blanket. They are completely useless, and do not function as described by their clever marketing. Imagine trying to sleep under a giant piece of tin foil.

Swiss army knives seem like the perfect travelers tool, but because the blades are small and don’t lock they can be more dangerous than useful. Most jobs require a larger knife with a fixed or locking blade, such as a machete. Bring it, but don’t expect to be doing more with it than opening beer bottles.

The most important piece of gear to pack is ear plugs. They are the perfect solution for screaming babies, noisy buses, and partying neighbors. Bring several sets, but don’t throw them away after you use them. They are very difficult to replace while abroad.

All in all, remember to pack light. It’s more important to be carrying the right couple of tools than a bag full of laundry.
