Sam Adams Portland Oregon Gay Mayor

On Tuesday Sam Adams, who is named after a beer, was elected mayor of Portland, Oregon. He said in his victory speech.

"I’m running not to be a gay mayor, but a great mayor, but I’m very cognizant, very aware, that I’m the first openly gay mayor of a major American city. That’s a real honor."

Hopefully Adams can focus on something other than just gay issues, since only a minority of the population is gay. Still, being a gay mayor, as he wants us all to be aware of, he might spend his time in office trying to reverse a ban on gay marriage in Oregon.

Adams isn’t the first gay mayor. Jim West was a gay mayor in Spokane, Washington. He was under investigation for soliciting young boys to work for him in exchange for sexual favors. The scandal became nationwide news, and he died from colon cancer. Hopefully Adams will set a better example.
